20 Luxurious Investment Pieces To Add To Your Wardrobe Now

Words by The MR PORTER Team

24 February 2023

What does luxury look like in 2023? That’s the question we at MR PORTER racked their brains over this season. In pursuit of the answer, we scoured a whole host of designers and discovered that the formula is actually pretty simple. It’s palate-cleansing, pared-back hues that work with everything in your wardrobe. It’s sumptuous fabrics that only get better with age. It’s elegant silhouettes that feel at once flattering, fresh and timeless. From New York’s The Row to Amsterdam’s RÓHE, here are 20 luxurious investment pieces that capture that spirit to add to your wardrobe.

01.

The restored mid-century Vacheron Constantin chronograph

Vacheron Constantin is the world’s oldest watchmaker if you consider its continuous operation since 1755. And you don’t get to be that without your watches running continuously, too. Even if, in this instance, you have to give this 1948 design a helping hand and manually wind it. This timeless timepiece is modern in that it has outlived the modernist era. But it is also luxurious in that its case is fashioned from 18-karat gold, housing a two-tone silvered dial and rare cabochon indexes.

02.

The Row’s standout overcoat

You don’t need a logo to spot an item by The Row. Rather than plaster its name over its wares, the New York-based, Savile Row-inspired brand has made quality its calling card. It’s more likely that you’ll notice the slick minimalism. And those details. This quietly lavish virgin wool-blend felt overcoat in a rich chocolate shade is all the marketing you need. Only, given that this model goes by the name Charles, we can guess at the regally dressed man the designers had in mind when they made it.

03.

The no-drama UMIT BENAN B+ cashmere sweater

As a teenager, Mr Umit Benan Sahin had dreams of making it in Hollywood. Instead, the Stuttgart-born, Istanbul-raised designer’s family sent him to Boston, where his older brother already lived, and where he fell into fashion. And while there is drama to his label UMIT BENAN B+, it is largely behind the scenes, sourcing the finest materials to produce exceptional clothing on a small scale in a factory in Italy shared with Caruso. Still, we can imagine this cashmere sweater doing a few loops of San Francisco on a high-speed police chase, worn by Mr Steve McQueen.

04.

The laid-back Piacenza Cashmere trousers

You can’t teach an old dog new tricks, right? So please explain how Piacenza Cashmere has been producing fine knitwear since 1733 and still manages to pull out a pair of trousers that couldn’t be more now if they tried. And, believe us, they ain’t trying. Cut in a relaxed straight-leg style and spun from plush cashmere, with a drawstring waist, they are built for slouching. And yet the brand itself is still keeping us on our toes.

05.

The Loro Piana Summer Walk loafers

These Italian-made Loro Piana Summer Walk deck shoes aren’t so much an article of clothing as an embodiment of la dolce vita (think Riva yachts, aperitivo and a sunset passeggiata). If that doesn’t sound dreamy enough, they’re also fashioned from the finest Loro Piana suede, with cushioned soles for added comfort. What’s more luxurious than that?

06.

The TOM FORD suede biker jacket

Frankly, you could close your eyes, dive headfirst into TOM FORD’s offering and you’d be guaranteed emerge with something utterly sumptuous. But if your accountant insists that you narrow it down to just one item this season, you could do worse than to pick this chocolate-brown suede biker jacket that fits like a dream and will last you for ever.

07.

The Mr P. patchwork cardigan

You might not hear the hushed tones of this ecru Mr P. cardigan amid the clamour of modern life. But this here is quiet luxury – the sort that prioritises deliciously plush fabrics (100 per cent wool in this case), subdued hues, exquisite craftsmanship and silhouettes that will stand the test of the time. No bells or whistles necessary.

08.

The expandable Zegna shell holdall

Modern travel might not evoke quite the same glamour of yesteryear, but there’s no reason why you should let your style standards slip entirely. Instead, turn to our friends at Zegna, whose sleek holdall exudes both polish and practicality (thanks to its durable shell construction and adjustable size) – and will instantly smarten up a cosy airport look in one fell swoop.

09.

The everyday Canali blazer

Investing in relaxed tailoring in a surefire way to weave quiet luxury into your everyday. Don’t mind if we suggest Canali’s suede blazer, which looks just as stealthily luxurious over matching trousers as it does on laid-back denim. When in Rome, do as the Romans do, right?

10.

The Fear of God Eternal shirt

If there’s any staple that’s truly deserving of the term “eternal” (which is also the name of Fear of God’s latest capsule), a contemporary white shirt would surely be it. Tailored from poplin, this one has a soft handle and dropped shoulder seams to enhance the relaxed structure.

11.

The comfy Officine Creative clogs

Slip-on shoes have been all the rage in recent months, so it’s only right you get your hands on a pair you can wear with your smarter looks. Officine Creative’s Agora pair – threaded with adjustable straps and set on serrated rubber soles – is one of our favourites.

12.

The smart Berluti backpack

Few things are better than a Berluti briefcase, and a Berluti backpack that doubles up as a briefcase sure is one of them. Crafted from the house’s signature Venezia burnished leather, this one is designed with plenty of handy pockets including one for your phone and a padded laptop sleeve. Call it your new commute companion, if you will.

13.

The Ghiaia Cashmere cotton chinos

New to MR PORTER, family-run brand Ghiaia Cashmere focuses on premium basics, from (you guessed it) cashmere sweaters and polo shirts to knitted accessories and smart-casual trousers, such as these stone-coloured cotton chinos with a wide, straight leg. A lesson in effortless Italian style.

14.

The Anita Ko stud chain

A simple gold or silver chain is a great place to start if you’re a little unsure when it comes to jewellery. But regular link chains are two a penny, so to stand out from the crowd just enough we recommend the Eternity Spike necklace from Anita Ko’s subtly punk-inspired collection, with its highly polished pyramid studs.

15.

The versatile Brunello Cucinelli jacket

Business meetings, events, special occasions… We’re getting our tailoring out more and more these days. So, when it comes to suiting, we want the pieces we invest in to have a bit of personality. Cue this Brunello Cucinelli double-breasted wool jacket. It’s smartly tailored but the peak lapels and double-breasted fastening give it a vintage feel.

16.

The RÓHE straight-leg jeans

Nothing beats a well-cut pair of jeans in a classic shape. You can dress them up with loafers and a shirt for a casual event, or throw on a pair of neutral sneakers and a hoodie or bold sweater for the weekend. This 1990s-inspired light-blue denim pair from RÓHE has a relaxed straight-leg profile that make them the perfect all-rounders.

17.

The new Common Projects sneaker archetype

The Common Projects Achilles arguably changed the course of sneaker history when it debuted almost two decades ago. But 20 years is a long time to be wearing the same style of white, leather, rubber-soled shoe. Enter, the Decades sneaker. New this season, they have a perforated toe box for breathability and a few more details than the ultra-low-profile Achilles.

18.

The lush Stòffa cashmere polo

If you have a uniform that includes a polo shirt, then this cashmere version from Stòffa is the perfect lush upgrade. It would work well with navy trousers for work, or jeans on the weekend, it’s a true all-rounder that will turn heads and encourage pats on the back from those eager to feel the softness of the material. Not a bad proposition for a simple polo.

19.

The Jacques Marie Mage tortoiseshell sunglasses

What’s better than one luxury brand? Two. That’s exactly the case with these exclusive-to-us tortoiseshell sunglasses, which are the work of eyewear experts Jacques Marie Mage in cahoots with UMIT BENAN B+. They’re named in tribute to the gloriously sunny nation of Belize – but rest assured they’ll look equally at home in less tropical locales, too.

20.

The Miles Leon herringbone overshirt

Be sure to add Miles Leon to your list of names to know. The London-based upstart label earned top prize in our MR PORTER FUTURES competition for its timeless-but-never-dull aesthetic, and this exquisitely crafted wool and cashmere overshirt is the perfect all-rounder piece to kick off your soon-to-be-burgeoning collection.
