“A man doesn’t always want to think too long or take the time to think about his outfit choices too much,” says Mr Derek Van Heurck, the younger half of the father-and-son duo behind Belgian casualwear brand Bellerose. Inspired by classic, casual workwear, the capsule collection they have created exclusively for MR PORTER is full of pieces that will give your summer wardrobe a bit of effortless oomph without looking like you’re trying too hard.
“The idea behind this collection was to twist good basics in fresh colourways that you could combine with many different things,” confirms Mr Van Heurck Jr of the capsule’s breadth of long-wearing and reliably stylish pieces. “We’ve tried to simplify a man’s life, while also making sure he has some great summer colours and fabrics to choose from.”
Think statement sweaters in cheery shades spun from tactile cotton or camp-collar linen shirts that come in a multitude of colourways and prints (and we mean it, there’s everything from plain navy to leopard heads and dragons). There’s nothing overly complex here, just understated, summer-appropriate clothes that will work on a man regardless of his age, as the Messrs Van Heurck show below.
The cross-generational appeal of the brand is no happy coincidence; it’s largely down to the duo’s harmonious working relationship. “My father and I have worked together for 11 years now,” says Mr Derek Van Heurck. “We have always been very close and we are always challenging each other. We really have the same taste and we trust each other, so it makes it interesting when we’re pushing each other creatively. But in the end, we tend to agree on what we’re putting out there.”
We asked the men to take the capsule for a spin and show us how they’re wearing their favourite pieces, each in their own particular ways. So, whether you’re heading back to the office for the first time in months, meeting a pal for lunch or taking a socially distanced walk on the beach, Messrs Van Heurck are here to get you thinking about how you could upgrade even your most casual looks.
01. For the office

Mr Patrick Van Heurck: This is the ideal jacket to wear with a good pair of vintage jeans, white Aldens and a grey T-shirt. I love a good-quality cotton coach jacket. Every man should have one in his wardrobe and this one is particularly interesting because of the micro-checked fabric.
Mr Derek Van Heurck: I’m a big fan of the linen short-sleeved shirt for work. I think this one is very chic because of its colour and weight. The colour is a deep blue, which can be worn everywhere, whether that’s the beach or the office. The weight of the linen is also perfect. It’s not too light, but it’s not too heavy. It maintains a bit of structure, but is fresh and breezy. I think it goes well with white jeans and a pair of New Balance 990v5s.
02. For a stroll along the beach

Mr Patrick Van Heurck: I like to wear a short-sleeved shirt at the pool or on the beach because it’s smarter, but still good for the weather. This bowling shirt will look good whether I’m wearing shorts or jeans. I’m often wearing Birkenstocks.
Mr Derek Van Heurck: At the pool or on the beach, I like to wear board shorts that are not too sophisticated or too sporty. Instead, they need to be casual and in a good colour. This shade is great because you can wear it with many different things. As I’ve done here, you can wear these with a Hawaiian shirt, which I’m also a big fan of. The mix of colours and the design are exactly what I want to wear at the moment. It’s always good to wear a white T-shirt with this silhouette. It freshens up everything. On the feet, like my dad, a good pair of Birkenstocks. Always a reliable basic.

03. For a lunch date

Mr Patrick Van Heurck: I think this shirt is brilliant because it is between a shirt and an overshirt. You can wear it open or buttoned up – both work well. It’s made from a very light denim, which is easy to wear with different things. Here, I’m wearing it with a pair of grey cotton trousers.
Mr Derek Van Heurck: In summer, even though it’s warm, I always like to have a piece of cotton knitwear. This one is extremely comfortable and I really like the combination of colours. It’s best teamed with a pair of worn-in jeans.
