On The Town

The Best-Dressed Men Of December 2019

From Tyler, the Creator to Mr Timmy Xu – the men who wore it well last month

You may have taken a holiday in the past month, but you know who didn’t? Celebrities. No, the fame game is an always-on affair. Much like your recent festive game of Monopoly, it has no clear end in sight. In December, while the mortals of the world were trying to finish off their Christmas shopping and grit their teeth through all those holiday hangovers, the movers and shakers of planet Earth continued to do what they do best: wear outfits in public. Here are the ones that particularly caught our bleary eyes amid all the baubles.

Now, this is how you dress for flying. In fact, there’s something positively Top Gun-y about this outfit from Chinese actor and pop star Mr Xu Wei Zhou (or Mr Timmy Xu, as he is known to fans across the world), thanks to its combination of shearling bomber jacket, shades and rather military-looking patched beanie. No, those shoes don’t look like they’ll be particularly easy to slip off for security, but we imagine such concerns matter little when you’re in the 4.5-million-Weibo-followers bracket.

02. Mr James Norton

Here is Mr James Norton, who appeared in December’s most festive tearjerker Little Women, doing very little to shake off that “period drama heartthrob” tag at the London photocall for the same. Yet the clothes are modern: neatly tapered trousers; a corduroy jacket; some very nice, military-inspired boots. Where on Earth could all these lovely things be from? Where indeed…

03. Mr Eddie Redmayne

This outfit is not, admittedly, a bolt out of the blue for Mr Eddie Redmayne, who has been setting red carpets alight in recent years with his colourful tailoring. That does not, however, mean it isn’t great: this slim-fitting velvet suit is just the sort of thing he (and anyone else with his rangy frame) can pull off very well indeed, while the colour is appropriately seasonal, in a Christmas-party-at-Annabel’s kind of way.

What makes this – and many of this relentlessly hip rapper’s outfits – so appealing is the nonchalant, almost defiant way in which it combines different style movements. We have the gold chain, a hip-hop staple. We have the Dr. Martens shoes – more punk, these. Then we have the wide-cut, Dickies-esque trousers, which nod to workwear. And then we have the countrified sportswear: a cricket sweater, a tweed blazer, a trapper hat, even! It’s all held together by the simple colour palette – brown, cream and yellow, as well as, of course, the fact that this chap seems to be able to make anything he throws on his shoulders look good.

Another colour combo from the Ghost-of-Christmas-Past playbook is offered up here by ever-more auteur-ish Hollywood hunk Mr Matthew McConaughey. And, actually, it has a rather subtle effect: the deep teal of the shearling coat, worn over a lighter turtleneck, is like midnight blue next to navy, yet it’s a little more fun and surprising. Then the black underneath makes it all seem a little smarter, rather than outlandish. Plus, the lenses of the shades match! How’s that for attention to detail?

06. Mr Timothée Chalamet

Another dashing young man brought on board for Little Women, Mr Timothée Chalamet has also become one-to-watch on the party-event-premiere scene in the past couple of years, thanks to his continuing bravery when it comes to clothing. Given this context, this is actually a rather muted outfit for him, but, still we like it. Baby pink isn’t, let’s say, the easiest colour to pull off, even if you have been told in advance that the night’s step-and-repeat backdrop will be decorated in a similar hue, but Mr Chalamet has wisely opted here for a suit that’s slightly looser fitting to counteract the fact that lighter colours are rather unforgiving on creases and bulges, not that he has that many. He’s also kept the rest of his palette clean and simple – when you’re going for a big statement colour like this, there’s no need to complicate things further.

07. Mr Ryan Reynolds

Yes, Mr Ryan Reynolds is wearing brown in town, but we can forgive that, can’t we? In any case, it’s not just brown, but a range of brownish tones from coffee, to chocolate, to a sort of hazelnut in the knitted polo shirt. This might all be a bit much, admittedly, if it were not for the flashes of red and pink – the pocket square and the socks may be small details but, as we’re sure Mr Reynolds is well aware, they lift the whole look considerably.

08. Mr Sam Rockwell

When MR PORTER recently met Mr Sam Rockwell, we found him appealingly frank and rough around the edges, and we appreciate the same qualities in this outfit he put forward in December. The navy suit, of course, is a rather safe option, but look at how he’s destabilised it: a loosely buttoned patterned silk shirt, orange socks, velvet tasselled loafers in a matching blue. It’s hard to tell whether he’s just got up or been out all night – either way, it looks like he’s had a fun time.
