In the latest installment of our series where we ask members of our Style Council for a quick travel guide to the places they know best, Mr Hayden Cox gives us the inside track on Cabo San Lucas, on the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula.
“I am the designer and founder of Haydenshapes Surfboards, operating between Australia and the US. With Cabo just a little over two hours’ flight from my Los Angeles headquarters, it’s a go-to travel destination to get that perfect blend of great weather, good food, relaxing downtime and fun surfing – all year-round. Here are my recommendations for a laid-back trip.”

Where to eat
Agua

“Located within the grounds of One&Only Palmilla resort, Agua definitely has some of the best flavours in Cabo. You can’t beat the waterfront location, as well as the live music and atmosphere. Arrive an hour or two early for dinner and grab a drink on the beach down below.”

“This is definitely a cool spot to check out. As you enter, there’s a bar set up specifically for taste testing locally made tequila and mezcal. It’s set on 25 acres and is located inland in the Baja foothills. They farm and grow a lot of their own produce. It’s definitely the place for some drinks and music in the evening.”

“It’s got that classic vibe about it and it’s the one place I’ve stayed recently where I could really disconnect and appreciate getting into holiday mode. The service is top-notch and feels really personalised. In my opinion, it’s located in the best spot along the beach. You don’t feel the need to leave all that much.”

What to do

“Last time I went to Cabo, I brought some boards with me to test out and ‘Zippers’ was a pretty fun break located close to the resort. It offered some fast running walls to surf with my boards. The crew at One&Only Palmilla’s Tropicsurf centre took me out to other good surf breaks including ‘Old Man’s’ and ‘Monuments’, which is within 15 minutes of the hotel. I took a day out to go visit the East Cape and I hung out with the iconic surfer Gerry Lopez, who lent some local knowledge. We had a fun surf in a private community nearby a spot called ‘Nine Palms.’”
