Well, they did it. We all did. The newly minted Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Ms Meghan Markle, were married in Windsor on Saturday, but we were the real winners. Congratulations to us. We laughed (at the steady stream of jokes and memes coming with lightning quickness; Mr Tom Hardy’s cutaway during the Lord’s Prayer), we cried (allergies! Well, and that amazing gospel choir) – and, most importantly, we critiqued everyone’s attire. Or wasn’t that, in fact, the whole purpose of the show? Here, we round up a few of our favourite plus-ones doing their best to keep up with the ladies.

Make morning dress modern

Mr David Beckham’s very modern take on proper morning dress (with a pair of Ray-Ban Wayfarers to boot), was, menswear-wise, the star of the show. In an echo of Princess Di debuting Mr John Galliano’s Dior at the Met Gala in 1996, Mr Beckham brought a little royal splendour to our first glimpse of Mr Kim Jones’s reign at Dior Homme. And, one heck of a debut it was – laser sharp tailoring (and some new inspiration for my next trip to the tailor) on very traditional, even old-fashioned items (a double-breasted waistcoat! A watch on a fob!), to go along with a significant amount of neck ink on display (and a mouthful of chewing gum).

Get your feet in order

Any consideration of Prince Harry’s polo pal Mr Nacho Figueras’s brilliant blue get-up has to start with his very comfy-looking velvet slippers. And, let that be a lesson to us all, to build our more formal outfits from the ground up. Once you’ve opted for the almost Papal-level luxe of these slippers, the flowing form of a fuller trouser and raffish playboy double-breasted jacket seem, well, almost obvious. Extra points for the contrast-collar shirt as a way to wear more blue (on the body of the shirt), while presenting a formal white collar to the world.

Blend in

The internet had quite a bit of fun identifying Mr George Clooney in slideshows of the event as an anonymous guest of Ms Clooney’s. And for good reason. We certainly appreciate playing background at a formal event, especially one in which your significant other is encouraged to wear statement headwear and a knockout colour. And in such cases, for a daytime wedding in late May, it is impossible to fault a mid-grey suit and expressive accessories. We would however council against neckwear and pocket squares that are too match-y – looking, as they might, as if they were purchased in a pack at the airport on your way out of town – and go for some complementary pattern drama of paisley with print, or pin dots with stripes.
