THE JOURNAL

It’s July, it’s high summer and Wimbledon is in full swing. Feeling inspired to pick up a racket? You’re not alone. But before you join the frantic rush to book the last of your local courts, it’s worth taking a moment for a quick inventory check. Tennis, thankfully, isn’t a sport that requires a huge amount of kit; if you can get your hands on a racket and a tube of balls – ideally not the same ones you use to play fetch with the dog – then you’re more or less good to go. One thing you might want to invest in, however, is a proper bag.
Unlike the pros we’ve been watching on TV, who stride onto court with enormous, six-racket bags slung over their shoulders, the average fair-weather player can fit everything they need into a pretty small package. That’s not to suggest, of course, that any old bag will do. One with added features such as racket compartments will make your life considerably easier, and if you’re arriving straight from the office it also helps to have something that doesn’t scream “tennis bag”.
Stepping up to fulfil the brief is Herschel Supply Co, whose latest collaboration with the tennis brand Prince serves up a range of backpacks, totes and cross-body bags based on time-honoured styles from its core collection but with neat additional details designed to serve the needs of the summer tennis crowd. We’re talking water-bottle sleeves, pockets for stashing balls and plenty of other thoughtful little details, all wrapped up in a smart package that wouldn’t look out of place on the commute.
As smart and functional as you’d expect from Herschel, this new Prince capsule is just the thing for tennis players who need to fit their sporting endeavours around a busy schedule. Below are a couple of our highlights, both available now on MR PORTER.
01.
The Heritage Pro backpack

The flagship model of Herschel’s Heritage line, the Pro boasts a body made from 100 per cent recycled fabric, contoured shoulder straps and a sleeker, more contemporary design than the vintage-inspired standard model. That’s on top of all of the standard features, which includes a 15-inch laptop sleeve. Opt for the Prince version and you’ll also get a racket compartment with Velcro zipper pulls, a glossy black-on-black logo finish and our favourite little detail: a removable carabiner for clipping the bag to the chain-link fence when you enter the court. We’re not sure who came up with that one, but we’re glad they did.
02.
The Alexander tote

Made from a recycled TPE-coated material that’s hardwearing and weather-resistant, Herschel’s Alexander tote bag is a tough cookie capable of withstanding most conditions – and certainly the ones in which you’d choose to play tennis. A natural choice for the brand’s Prince collection, then, for which it has been upgraded with a separate racket zip-up racket sleeve, dual internal mesh pockets for stashing tennis balls, and, of course, that nifty little carabiner.
