THE JOURNAL

Our very tired Chief Sub-Editor cannot buy sleep, so here are the next best things on his Wish List.
What I really want this week is sleep. Don’t get me wrong, I love a bank holiday as much as the next colleague, but with deadlines looming – someone has check all this splendid MR PORTER content for typos – and you end up paying for it the following week. Sadly, you can’t put a sneaky 40 winks on your Wish List, so instead I’ve opted for five items, all freshly minted, with R&R in mind. Roll on May Day.
The shirt
This breezy camp-collar shirt by French-sounding New York brand Aimé Leon Dore distils the spirit of summer idleness. No, wait – gin, with tonic, is the spirit of summer idleness. No matter, this item is hand-dyed in tiny batches to ensure, like your craft grog, no two are alike.
The sunglasses
Ah, for the life of Dickie Greenleaf, loafing around the Italian Riviera of a summer – it all turns out rosy for him, right? The closest I get might be a Carluccio’s special over a blithesome lunch break, but at least these tortoiseshell Italian-made sunglasses by Oliver Peoples should dampen the glare off the shopping-centre paving tiles on the way there.
The sweater
The socks
Fact: fathers of three-year-old boys know more about dinosaurs than you. Hence I could identify Paul Smith’s trademark therapod as a carnivore of the Late Jurassic or Cretaceous period, possibly an allosaurus. (It is also a fact that dads like socks.)
The mug
Builder’s please. Splash of milk – blue top if they have it, but will settle for green. No sugar: I’m sweet enough already. Smashing.
