Pointers on how to dress this January from the heroes of London Fashion Week Men’s AW19.
We might only just be mere days into the new year but, alas, fashion waits for no man. As we write this, menswear designers across the world are already in the throes of showing their AW19 collections, and first up on the schedule was London Fashion Week Men’s, which took place in the city this weekend. The British Fashion Council has moved its show space from central to east London, and the furthest from Savile Row it has ever been (perhaps metaphorically as well as physically speaking). As usual, the menagerie of peacocks was out to play, and as such, there were a few things that caught our eye. From outdoors gear paired with just about everything to a new dawn of statement coats – and that brilliant Midnight Cowboy-esque look courtesy of Messrs Luke Day and Ben Cobb (pictured above) – here’s our pseudo-analysis of what the most stylish men in London wore.
DOUBLE THE FUN

If the definition of being cool is to not care, to be stylish without appearing to try, then coordinating your outfit with another person should not, in theory, be desirable in the contexts of a feature celebrating clothes. But these two have pulled it off with aplomb. How? Well, it’s all very subtle, and therefore harmonious. Also, they have selected clothes that are classic and timeless, rather than trend-led and garish. His beige workwear jacket balances nicely with her smart, oversized blazer, for example. And the same goes for his white rollneck and her white shirt. A stylish lesson in couples-dressing indeed.

A MAGIC EYE

We can’t be sure whether these two colluded on their looks, as well. If you move in the same circles, you often end up dressing like your friends, if you mean to or not. But, whether there was an agreement in place to look like the wall of a university student who has just returned from Goa or not, they have nonetheless caught our eye. So much so that we’ve now been staring at the jacket on the right for so long we’re almost certain we can see the outline of a sailboat.

THE PERFECT BALANCE

A few years ago, this image would be one of a man who woke up confused. A man who could not decide whether to dress for an interview, or for a day hanging around on a BMX outside his local corner shop. Today, it is simply the image of someone enjoying the fact that there are no rules anymore when it comes to style. Bucket hat and blazer? Fine. Woolly fleece and chinos? Great. In theory, the components of this outfit could have disagreed with each other aggressively. But, having expertly mixed textures, tones and styles, this man has got it spot on.

SNEAKER TURNING POINTS

Sneakers have really been through it over the past year, but one thing is certain: they are now fair game to wear with just about anything. The man on the left makes a convincing case for that. A sleek pair of Nike Air Max 97s under some smart, heavy-twill trousers is perhaps not the most obvious pairing, but the whole “futuristic banker at a Mr Kiko Kostadinov show” thing he’s doing actually works.

FLEECE POWER

Was there ever a glow-up as bright as the fleece’s? The garment formerly known as the kind of thing your grandad wore to go rambling has wriggled its way into the menswear psyche and has established itself there quite comfortably over the past year. This gent has teamed his Patagonia iteration with a Loewe bag and a pair of tailored Prince of Wales check trousers, showing that you can wear something warm and comfortable while looking fashionable, even in January.
