It might be well established in the world of high fashion, but for all its airs and graces, SAINT LAURENT still manages to make clothing that is surprisingly easy to pull on. And not just for young waif-and-stray types, but genuinely for a cross-generation of men. It helps of course, that one of the brand’s main inspirations is something we can all relate to: music.
Good news, then, because MR PORTER today releases an exclusive capsule collection with the brand that we find to be eminently wearable. Polished without losing the its sense of rebellious edginess, SAINT LAURENT’s characteristic rock ‘n’ roll music aesthetic has been distilled into a 14-piece collection, including a black silk crepe de chine shirt and a jacquard knit sweater that are both printed with musical notes. For something a little more utilitarian, see the zebra-print military jacket which references the brand’s 1967 safari-inspired collection and will make a versatile wardrobe staple, or the biker jacket that has been crafted in Italy from soft, supple leather and is lined with satin.
Though these clothes may be inspired by rock stars (SAINT LAURENT has dressed everyone including Sir Mick Jagger and Mr Keith Richards in the past), that doesn’t mean you have to be one to pull them off well. Dressing up to the nines in a rakish tuxedo from the brand is a singular pleasure, but so too is donning a white T-shirt and sneakers from the house when you don’t need to make the effort. When a fashion designer can make both of these approaches to dressing work with such ease, well, that’s music to our ears.
