How Can I Switch Up My Sunglasses This Summer? Ask MR PORTER

Sunglasses, much like your anxiety medication and route to work, are very personal, specific things that you don’t necessarily want to experiment with. Once you get used to something that works for you, it can be very hard to see another way, and it is not necessarily advisable or desirable to look for one. The less said about them, the better.

However, you may also feel like you are in a bit of a rut when it comes to your chosen method of sun protection. And, now you are starting to live your best life again, why not try something new? With that in mind…

To answer such a vital query, we have deployed a two-pronged attack – the cold, hard analytical nous of our Buyer Ms Louise Schwartz, and the more lyrical ponderings of Nike global editorial director, MR PORTER Style Council member, and all-round disliker of cataracts, Mr Dan Rookwood. Check out what they had to say, below.

“Sunglasses are one of the easiest, lowest risk and – depending on the brand and on how often you lose them – most cost-effective ways of changing up your look,” says Rookwood to kick us off. “I know this, and yet… I’ve personally worn the same styles for the past 10 to 15 years. My defaults have been, and perhaps always will be, the classic, less-is-more black Ray-Ban Wayfarers and Clubmasters. But it wouldn’t hurt to change things up with a summer fling,” he tells us. “I’m currently batting my eyelashes at these clear acetate frames from Garrett Leight California Optical and these bold tortoiseshell round frames by Oliver Peoples.

“For something a little outside my comfort zone style-wise, but within it budget-wise, I like these squared-off round frames and, for a pop of summer colour, these yellow frames – both from Cubitts. They could be a gateway to something more daring… next year. But for now, it looks like I’ve just accidentally added these foldable tortoiseshell D-frames by Persol to cart. Another timeless classic.”

If you’re looking for more insider knowledge when it comes to sunglasses tips, MR PORTER’s Ms Louise Schwartz has some thoughts on the sunglasses brands that have caught her eye this season. “MOSCOT is a New York City institution renowned for its iconic designs, spanning five generations and more than 100 years of eyewear expertise. The brand showcases some of the best in the industry, inspired by vintage designs from its archives, intended for timeless pieces you’ll treasure forever. With a huge following, you might recognise some of its iconic frames worn by the likes of Johnny Depp, Tim Burton and Jeff Goldblum.” High praise, indeed.

Still looking for something a little different? Try Matsuda. “Championing the best of Japanese craftsmanship and design, Mastuda offers something completely unique with its eyewear offering,” Schwartz reliably informs us. “Using the highest grade materials such as titanium, sterling silver and 18kt gold, each piece requires as many as 250 steps to complete. Japanese craftsmen transform raw materials into intricately detailed works of art, employing techniques few others would attempt, designed to last the test of time.”
