In this, our summer of tentative freedom, getting (well-) dressed for the outside world is a daunting prospect. With the dissolution of traditional dress codes compounded by the confusion of the pandemic, it’s hard to know what’s appropriate IRL anymore. But because everyone feels the same, the time is ripe for variety and experimentation; fittingly, July gave us a constellation of stars to guide us back to what looks good. Here are the best dressed men of the month.

Mr Timothée Chalamet may only be 25 years old, but the actor is already a veteran when it comes to turning up and serving should the red-carpet occasion demand it. Who could forget his Haider Ackermann pewter grey suit, worn at the Venice Film Festival 2019? Back on the rug for the Cannes Film Festival this month, the young actor did not disappoint. For the premiere for Mr Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch, Chalamet showed up in a custom metallic suit and cream Chelsea boots by TOM FORD, CELINE HOMME sunglasses and jewellery by Cartier. The moment was slightly overshadowed by Chalamet’s photocall with co-stars Ms Tilda Swinton, Mr Bill Murray, and his director later, which was relentlessly farmed for memes. But as an appetiser, this look was hugely satisfying.

How do you make an all-black outfit pop without looking like an extra who has snuck off the set of The Matrix 4? Let British actor Mr Damson Idris show you. The key is in the details and different shades of black he’s gone for. His grey-black nylon coat with what looks like a built-in cross-body pouch is definitely not your average outerwear. Also, not standard issue are the black trousers with zips where the creases should be, which lead directly to his spiked Christian Louboutin boots. The Snowfall star’s plain T-shirt grounds the whole look, which he’s accessorised with dark-tinted round-frame sunglasses. The lesson here? Black is always the new black.

Cream tea, anyone? Sorry, we couldn’t resist. Mr Eddie Redmayne accompanied his wife Hannah to Wimbledon in an outfit that proves he’s braver than we realised – not because it involved stepping outside his sartorial comfort zone, but because SW19 in July is ground zero for strawberry stains and spilled Pimms. Not what you want all over your Ralph Lauren Gregory silk-linen suit, knitted silk tie or whiter-than-Mr-Tim-Henman’s-teeth shirt and pocket square. Even the socks were a complementary shade of cream, matched nicely to the suede tasselled loafers.

No, your eyes are not deceiving you. That is indeed none other than Mr Khaby Lame, internet king of being thoroughly underwhelmed by pointless lifehacks. Granted, he looks a little different here. No extended hands, no exasperated expression. But if you’ve been following his meteoric rise – he’s well on his way to 100 million followers on TikTok – you’ll have taken note of his strong, streetwear-inspired sense of personal style, which is becoming more and more prominent as his fame increases. It’s on display here, complete with a few finishing touches in the form of an eye-catching kingfisher-blue camp-collar shirt and a serious statement watch. The high-street denim – complete with Sasuke from Naruto graphics – shows that he’s still got his feet on the ground.

While there were always question marks over who would hold that right berth in attack, or if it would be three or four at the back, you knew Mr Gareth Southgate’s sartorial game plan going into each of England’s Euro 2020 fixtures. Gone were the waistcoats of the previous World Cup: this time, the gaffer typically bossed it in a trademark lightweight blue suit. It was sober, certainly compared to the fans in Leicester Square with fireworks in places they shouldn’t be, and the gleaming white shirt very probably didn’t have three lions on it. But the polka dot tie was said to be lucky, which is good enough for us. Leading a squad brimming with potential to the final, shaking off long-held hoodoo and encouraging positive social change along the way, the team fell just short in the end to a deserving Italy, who had their own style icon in the dugout. But Southgate was an inspiration to all Englishmen this summer, and not just in terms of how he dressed.

With HBO’s reboot of iconic teen series Gossip Girl yet to make its way across the pond, the MR PORTER team at our London HQ at least have Mr Evan Mock’s relentlessly stylish turns to content ourselves with – as well as our own interview with the fuschia-haired star himself. While we already know Max Wolfe is the stand-in for Chuck Bass of this decade’s cohort, Mock appears to be giving him a run for his money in this top-to-toe Gucci look at a screening of the new show. It’s the clashing checks for us.

Legend has it that the last time Prince Charles bought a coat was before Mr Josh O’Connor was even born. It’s said he owns only two pieces of outerwear, both by Anderson & Sheppard. The man who caught his mannerisms so specifically – eerily, even – for the recent series of The Crown, meanwhile, appears to be wearing two items of clothing in just one top here. Seen the previous day at Cannes in a double-breasted suit, it’s the garb shown above that grabbed us. The blush tone returns, teamed this time with olive trousers, Converse high-tops and a tan vest that’s also part of the shirt? As with his exacting performance, it’s hard to know where one ends and the other starts.
