Doggy Style

Words by Mr Adam Welch

19 March 2015

Put a bit of “woof” into your wardrobe by taking some cues from Instagram’s most stylish (and followed) canines.

If you’re adept at Instagram and interested in what you wear, you might already spend some time browsing hashtags such as #tailoring, #sneakers or even, we would like to think #MRPORTER. Well, here’s another one for you to check out: #dogsofinstagram. Why? Because, as it turns out, the best-dressed among man’s best friends (when it comes to social media, at least) have got startlingly proficient at throwing looks together in the past couple of years. Of course, clothing one’s dog is nothing new. Artist Mr William Wegman has been dressing up and photographing his Weimaraner dogs for decades – one of them, Man Ray, was voted the Village Voice’s “Man of the Year” in 1982. But just as the iPhone and social media have accelerated and democratised all aspects of the fashion-media industrial complex, today’s dog style has become beyond fierce. It’s rabid. Is it also a little ridiculous? Assuredly. But, for all those currently mid-scoff, bear with us. We at MR PORTER anticipated such disbelief, and have come prepared. Scroll down to discover how the latest wave of sartorial dogstagrammers, as well as provoking that most powerful of online exhalations “lol”, might be able to teach you a thing or two*.

*While we have engaged in the literary conceit of actually quoting the dogs in this story, we are not unhinged and realise that the answers most likely come from each of these pups’ retinue of owners, publicists, managers, herbalists and/ or social media managers.

Mr Geordi La Corgi

His tip: bow ties, like puppies, aren’t just for Christmas

Mr Geordi La Corgi may have ancestral roots in Pembrokeshire, Wales (where his breed originated), but his sun-kissed Instagram profile speaks clearly of one location: his home town of Los Angeles. Like many of his fellow Angelinos, he’s rather image-conscious, listing “training in dog agility, getting my beauty sleep and wooing the lady corgis” as off-duty pastimes. But he’s also mastered the Californian knack of dressing down, encapsulated in the tasteful selection of casual shirts in chambray, wide pinstripe and plaid that feature on his Instagram feed. In addition, he’s evidently an expert in bow-tie wearing, and makes a great case for the accessory as part of a casual ensemble. Our favourite look in this vein pairs a textured bow tie with a white and blue windowpane-check shirt – recreate it with this knitted tie from Lanvin and shirt from New York tastemaker Steven Alan.

WHAT TO WEAR

Mr Otis Barkington

His tip: use your accessories to pick out a colour

“Hip, simple, keep it 100.” Mr Otis Barkington’s style motto, like his outfits, are just that little bit more street than many of his #dogsofinstagram cohorts. A Netflix-addicted Boston terrier from Anaheim, California, Mr Barkington favours sportswear in his year-old Instagram feed, on which he works through a range of casual looks and proudly supports his favourite NFL team, the San Diego Chargers. Often seen in a beanie hat, he also has a range of neckwear, from a raffish scarf in chambray cotton to the simple leather collar, pictured above. His styling of this last item shows how a well-placed accessory can pick out a flattering colour, in this case, the brown of his eyes – try a similar trick by pairing neutral shades of black, white and grey with a belt in a contrasting colour.

Logan’s Look

His tip: add a twist to your shirting with sleeve turn-ups

If there are seven dog years to every human year then, from the perspective of Toronto-based toy poodle Logan (of much-adored Instagram account Logan’s Look) he’s been instagramming for more than 20 years. “When will it all end?” he must be thinking, the poor thing, while frantically sifting references in his head for the next day’s post. However, since 2012 when his account was launched, this almost shockingly adorable “gentlepup” has shown little sign of slowing, energetically populating his feed with the results of his singular style philosophy (which he refers to as “intentionally boring”). Incorporating a wide range of influences, from the work of Belgian innovator Mr Raf Simons to the all-American stylings of J.Crew, Logan is something of a style maverick who will try anything (from leopard-print leotards to a waterproof parka) once. But throughout, one motif comes back again and again – the sleeve turn-up. Make the most of this, Logan’s favourite styling trick for those with short legs, by opting for a denim shirt with contrasting cuffs, layering over a deep red turtleneck for a splash of colour.

MR CHANGO LEON

_His tip: keep fresh with a spread-collar shirt _

Many of Instagram’s foremost dogs-who-dress spring up from the toy breeds – presumably because all the Pomeranians, shih-tzus, French bulldogs and pugs are closer to sample size. But Mr Chango Leon, a Chicago-based pit bull terrier, handsomely bucks this trend with his suave ensembles. At six years old, Mr Leon, a rescue dog, who self-defines as the “freshest pit bull on the planet” is something of an OG (or should that be “OD”?) within #dogsofinstagram, and has a style to match, mixing tailoring, gold jewellery and many variations on the fedora, his signature accessory, in his hip-hop-inspired looks. Though he does one of the best Run-D.M.C. impersonations in the canine world (adidas tracksuit, big gold chain), we particularly like his more music-mogul-esque looks, featuring expensive-looking leather jackets, a range of designer sunglasses and casual blazers worn over T-shirts. His hot tip for spring is the spread-collar shirt, a piece that’s being recreated by several brands this season (including Wooyoungmi, Lanvin, Acne Studios and Sandro) as part of a sly 1950s trend. Wear one open-necked with a pair of gold-framed sunglasses and you too will be ready to star in a Diddy-esque, yacht-bound music video. Or to hang out of the window of a pimp ride, which is a favoured pursuit of Mr Leon – obviously.

Mr Remix the Dog

His tip: go retro with summer knitwear and big glasses

The style of Mr Remix stems from a simple equation. Or as he puts it, “Think bearded hipster meets David Beckham, plus fuzzy butt.” The result? “One handsome-looking pup.” A miniature schnauzer, based in Toronto, Mr Remix has been posting images of his outfits since 2013, when he decided it was time to share his passion for clothing (offline, “capture the sock” is a favourite pastime) with the general public. Though he has a playful approach to dressing – reflected in the range of multi-coloured sunglasses he works through on his feed – he has a knack for pulling off a distinguished piece of knitwear, often accessorising with a wide-rimmed pair of tortoiseshell spectacles for a retro effect (think a canine Mr Arthur Ashe). Channel the look with a lightweight summer sweater from J.Crew – one of Mr Remix’s favourite human brands – and a pair of vintage-styled optical glasses from Cutler and Gross.
