Exclusive: John Elliott’s Japan-Made Capsule

Words by Ms Molly Isabella Smith

2 November 2018

The West Coast designer takes a trip to the Far East.

On the face of it, Mr John Elliott is as American as apple pie. The designer was born and raised in San Francisco before relocating to LA to launch his eponymous brand, and has previously called himself the embodiment of a California kid. His collections, too – built around a core of sweatpantshoodies and long-line T-shirts – cater for a sports- and streetwear-loving US base and have largely been crafted in the US. Until now, that is. MR PORTER has teamed up with John Elliott on an exclusive eight-piece drop that lands on site today, and the focus is all on Japanese textiles.

“When pulling inspiration for this capsule, I looked at the Japanese fabrications that are core to the brand and applied them to silhouettes that our customer loves,” the designer told us. “The result is our first collection that is entirely developed and produced in Japan.” And what a collection it is. Those familiar with Mr Elliott’s work will recognise The Cast 2 skinny jeans, the terry shorts and the oversized sweatshirt, but there are also some left-field pieces that really showcase the quality of the materials employed (see the camp collar and Western shirts). On the flip side, the tie-dye theme that *cough* ties it all together is Californian through and through. How does that saying go? You can take the boy out of… you know where we’re going with this.
