Introducing: Story Mfg.

6 March 2019

The bold new anti-fast-fashion label landing on MR PORTER now – just in time to save the world .

You’d be hard pressed to find a more environmentally friendly fashion brand than Story Mfg. The label, founded in 2013, is the brainchild of London-based Ms Katy Al-Rubeyi and Mr Saeed Al-Rubeyi (affectionately known as Bobbin Threadbare) – partners in both life and fashion who wanted to create “positive products” that not only do no harm, but aim to benefit both people and planet. At the core of their brand lays an almost holistic belief that all garments are made for longevity (based on the idea that buying less is the most sustainable way to live), and when the clothes are ultimately discarded, they can even biodegrade to enrich the soil.

The label’s shapes and silhouettes are heavily informed by workwear; a cotton-canvas chore jacket finished with hand-embroidered palm trees, overshirts in russet brown and wide-legged organic-twill trousers in bark and sage green. Yet, it’s the slow-moving, hand-dyeing procedure (using natural dyes) and sustainable materials that is their trademark. This is achieve exclusively using eco-friendly plant-based pigments – with the only exception of deadstock or recycled fabrics – and creates a byproduct that actually serves as a nutrient-rich fertiliser.

Couple that with the fact that their fabrics are all woven by hand on ancient looms, and what you have is a brand that sits in stark contrast to disposable fast fashion that peddles clothes out at lightning speed. Scroll down to see some of our favourites.
