THE JOURNAL

If there’s anything that 2023 has taught us, it’s that very few things are certain nowadays. But if there’s one thing that doesn’t cast one single shadow of a doubt, it’s got to be that, once the weather changes, our sartorial choices logically follow suit. We certainly can’t be making excuses for being taken off-guard by the colder weather – but can we be taken aback by the holiday frenzy, Christmas shopping, imminent mercury drop and the sartorial transition into the heavier side of your wardrobe? Absolutely.
If that sounds like you, there’s no need to fret. Our in-house label, Mr P., has made sure to equip us with a six-point style guide for the months to come. And with the timeless, stylish staples from its AW23 and Permanent collection that you’ll need to make all the right impressions. Just see for yourself below.
01. Invest in a proper coat

When the temperature drops, having a quality coat to hand is key – and having a varied pool of options to pick from is even more important. Think of something for your work week, something for your casual days out and something for weekend adventures. We suggest you invest in outerwear that combines form and function and, of course, that lends itself to a variety of occasions. Whether you favour something shorter and chunkier – such as this shearling chore jacket – or you prefer knee-length trenches, macs and car coats, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for in Mr P.’s latest drop.
02. Master the neutrals

Once winter comes and the seasonal glumness hits, it’s all too easy to fall into a regimen of dull colours and drown into a sea of navy, black and grey paired without too much thought. If you’re anything like us, though, you’ll know that wearing dark layers won’t make up for lazy choices in the sartorial department. There’s a science to mastering the neutrals, and Mr P. has it down to a tee. The outerwear, trousers and shirts in these looks are a case in point.
03. Smarten up your casualwear

What does smart-casual even mean anymore? If you’re confused about what to wear, ahem, anywhere, then look no further than Mr P.’s AW23 collection – and its Permanent lineup. Perhaps it’s a knitted polo shirt worn with a grey blazer, or maybe it’s a crisp white shirt worn beneath an overcoat. Whatever your bag, make sure to mix smart and more relaxed staples. You’ll get a look that’ll take you anywhere from the office, to supper, to a date and after-hour drinks.
04. Make a grand entrance

The invitations are piling up, your holiday calendar is almost all crossed out… All you’re missing is a couple of good fits to make a grand entrance. To be the best-dressed guest at this year’s functions, may we suggest something as sleek as a velvet jacket. You can dress it up for more formal occasions – opt for a tuxedo shirt and a bow tie – or down in casual settings: we’ve gone for a rollneck, but a fine crew-neck knit works just as well. Don’t overlook your choice of trousers and accessories – no matter what the upper half of your outfit looks like, they can really make or break your get-up.
05. Bet on your layers

Winter is the time of year to work (read: dress) smarter – not harder. One of the best things that you can do in the colder months is get your layering down to a fine art. There are very few fashion faux-pas when it comes to dressing for winter, so more really is more this season. And shirts, crew necks, chunky knits, vests, polo shirts, jackets and coats are all layers to play with. A casual shirt beneath a rollneck? Great. A rollneck beneath a casual shirt? Even better.
06. Add a little colour

Accessories are usually the easiest way to liven up your winter outfits, but let us introduce you to a couple of Mr P. pieces in bold shades and subtle patterns that’ll add some character to otherwise dark, neutral layers. A houndstooth-checked coat, for instance – and be sure to colour-coordinate the rest of your fit with grey and navy shades – or a suede, carmine red jacket. Leave it open over black layers for the full effect.
