THE JOURNAL

There are certain brands that keep you coming back for more. It could be because their trousers are cut just so. Or it might be that the label’s idiosyncratic colour palette and signature prints are unparalleled. Whatever the reason for pledging your allegiance, these are the sort of brands that often end up being referred to as “cult”. In this, our final (sob) edition of the new season report, we’ve picked out three of our current fixations – Stone Island, KAPITAL and Acne Studios – and unpicked their most recent outings. Choose your fighter…
01. Stone Island

If ever there was an argument for sticking to what you know, it’s Stone Island, the Italian sportswear company founded in Italy in the early 1980s. The label rarely strays far from its tried-and-tested playbook of garment-dyed sweats, iridescent nylon jackets and polo shirts. But this winter, the brand has expanded its remit to include a selection of more playful pieces, including chunky cable-knits and a candy-pink down coat – all adorned with its signature insignia, of course.
02. KAPITAL

The thing about style is you shouldn’t take it all that seriously. Even if, like us, you’re pretty serious about style. It’s something KAPITAL – the Japanese brand responsible for slapping whimsical smiley face prints on its wares, not to mention these charming banana-patterned cargo trousers – knows all too well. Fruit-themed attire aside, this season the label has concentrated its efforts on functional, hardwearing workwear – think utility-inspired jackets and anything with a plethora of pockets.
03. Acne Studios

There are no upsides to an airline losing your luggage. Unless, that is, your name is Mr Jonny Johansson. The idea for his brand, Acne (aka Ambition to Create Novel Expressions) Studios, came about when the creative director’s suitcase never arrived at his destination and he couldn’t get his hands on a decent pair of jeans. After mastering denim (which developed its own cult following), the label moved on to every other facet of the male wardrobe, which, this season, includes some excellent stripy knitwear, super-wearable pastel-toned sweats and vintage-style patchwork denim.
