THE JOURNAL

From left: Messrs Andrew Garfield, Jamie Dornan and Ryan Gosling
From La La Land’s Mr Ryan Gosling to Fifty Shades’ Mr Jamie Dornan, here are the winners in the style stakes.
In case you haven’t heard, things didn’t go 100 per cent smoothly at last night’s Academy Awards ceremony. As in, the Oscar for Best Picture was given to the wrong film, La La Land, before being snatched back and re-gifted to the actual winner, Moonlight. To be honest, we shouldn’t be all that surprised. It’s merely one more confirmation that the world in 2017 has descended into sitcom chaos, the only remaining rule in our reality being that if the worst can happen, it will. Luckily, we don’t need to make the same gloomy analysis of the whole thing, style-wise. In fact, at this year’s ceremony, the increasingly Instagram-wary celebrities really pulled out all the stops to celebrate and add a splash of character to the classic tuxedo. Scroll down for our favourites. *Double-checks pictures.* Yes, these definitely are our favourites, we promise.

Wide lapels on a slight frame will broaden the chest and make you look taller – a concept Mr Andrew Garfield is no doubt familiar with, judging by this photograph. The tuxedo fits perfectly, fastening securely with no wrinkles or ripples, and we like how he’s chosen to wear his sleeves and trousers slightly cropped. We hope those patent leather loafers got to hop around a bit at one of the afterparties. If they’re not dancing shoes, what are?

Mr Ashton Sanders

A double-breasted suit is not a particularly easy thing for a 21-year-old to wear. Particularly when paired with a boardroom-appropriate necktie and chunky black Derbies. But somehow, Moonlight star Mr Ashton Sanders pulls it all off, taking a business-as-usual look and turning it into a sharp, red-carpet-worthy dinner outfit. Plus, shades! For sheer chutzpah alone, this would have been the look of the night, but there’s also something pleasingly sleek about the slim fit of the jacket, which lifts the whole thing well above its incidental novelty value.

Mr Ryan Gosling

He may look more like he’s turning up to a high school prom circa 1977 than the Academy Awards circa 2017, but damn it, Mr Ryan Gosling makes it work. Perhaps it’s because, as a counterpoint to the Anto Beverly Hills frilly shirt, he’s chosen a subtle shade of midnight blue for the tuxedo itself. Perhaps it’s because he’s kept it all relatively simple – Oxfords rather than loafers or slippers, no pocket square. Perhaps it’s because the tux is by Gucci, and Mr Alessandro Michele seems completely unable to do anything wrong right now. Any which way, he certainly deserves some kind of gong for this.

Mr Jamie Dornan

Considering his most recent roles in Fifty Shades Darker and the BBC’s The Fall, you might be forgiven for not recognising Mr Jamie Dornan with his clothes on. Ms Dakota Johnson, however, had no problem in that regard, turning to her Fifty Shades co-star and quipping, “You look familiar,” as they appeared on stage to present La La Land (or should that be Moonlight?) with the award for Best Production Design. Obvious reasons notwithstanding, we’re glad Mr Dornan turned up un-nude because his Hermès jacket is a sight to behold.

Mr Paul Feig

If we didn’t know the director and screenwriter Mr Paul Feig, we’d guess, judging by this outfit, that he knew how to enjoy the finer things in life, and that he approached things with a sense of fun. The white rosette, the old-school glamour of the high, peak lapels and the well-arranged pocket square all point to such a conclusion. The reality is, he is a member of our Style Council, and we spoke to him last year when he was promoting his remake of Ghostbusters, so we know him fairly well, and we can confirm that his fantastic sense of style does not lie.
