The Best Winter Fitness Gear

Words by Mr Adam Welch

18 October 2016

We all know a nice slick kit can help inspire a better performance when it comes to exercise – here’s how to look the part this season.

As the nights draw in and the air crisps up, what’s the first thing you feel like doing when you get up in the morning? How about downing a pint of green slushy stuff, setting off at a sprint to your local gym and, once there, lunging into a 30-minute intensive HIIT circuit? No, us neither. The truth is, when it’s cold, you need all the help you can get maintaining your fitness routine (we’ve already served up some tips on this front in The Daily – read it here). But of course, getting the right kit can really help too. Scroll down for an edit of the best new gear for braving the elements with this season, as selected by MR PORTER’s team of editors (in a sly attempt to put off exercising themselves).

If you’re heading outside, whether that’s for a brief sprint or cycle to the gym, or an extended run through your nearest frost-covered locale, you’ll need something like the above top from running expert Salomon. Designed for trail-runners, in collaboration with real athletes, this piece’s stretch jersey fabric is ultralight, yet provides ample insulation, even when wet. Wear it over a simple running T-shirt from London’s own minimalist brand Iffley Road.

A pair of compression tights like the above pair from Nike Running is something you will be glad of during any winter exercise. Not only do they support you in all the right places, ensuring optimal muscle performance and recovery, their dry-fit fabric wicks moisture away from the skin, meaning you won’t emerge from your session dripping with sweat. Wear them under a pair of suitable shell running shorts – though some gym-goers are fond of presenting the world with their gluteus maximus, we think it’s slightly more stylish to leave the biggest muscle in the body to the imagination.

For outdoor winter running, there are few shoes more hardy and comfortable than Salomon’s S/Lab Black WINGS sneakers, which are fitted with a host of technical details to ensure a smoother ride, including welded overlays to offer support and toe protection, a cosy sock-like lining, and a pull-on lacing system that tightens as you run. When it’s cold, you need such bounteous spatterings of design innovation, take our word for it. Wear them with a pair of Nike’s dri-fit socks (because there’s no point driving a Porsche in your pyjamas, right?)
