THE JOURNAL

Three pairs of trunks you’ll be wearing in the pool on holiday.
It is sometimes tricky to single out three pieces from the hundreds that arrive on site every Tuesday to draw to your attention. But today, it was easy. These three pairs of swim shorts are rather visually arresting. You can’t miss them, in fact. Look at the pair from Missoni (not for too long, mind). They’re positively vibrating. That aside, we have summer holidays on the brain, and we’re naturally drawn towards anything that puts us in mind of said holidays. So, after double-checking flight details and messaging the Airbnb host, the only thing left to do is invest in some things we want to take with us. Ill-advised hat? Check. New sunglasses that we will inevitably lose? Check. Witty swim shorts? That’s where these three come in. Fun, well-fitting and stylish. And, if nothing else, they’ll distract from the one thing on our holiday to-do list, regarding the gym and a beach body, that we haven’t yet ticked off.

The bright stuff
As we mentioned above, there is nothing subtle about these swim shorts by Missoni. Their signature zigzag motif is certainly not in the business of restraint. But, whether you insist that everything you wear has some sort of exciting print or you prefer things a little plainer, swim shorts are an obvious opportunity for anyone to live a little. Hopefully, you’ll be wearing these somewhere so warm that you won’t need to wear anything else. But if you do, go for something simple such as this plain grey tee.

Smooth operator
We’re not sure whether swim shorts can be suave or sophisticated but, if they can, this pair by Berluti would stake a claim to such a description. The pattern here is less summer holiday, more cigars and whisky. Again, not something you would associate with a piece of clothing you wear in a swimming pool, but there is certainly something rather rakish and mature about them. So much so, we can imagine these would go down rather well should you decide to leave the pool and, say, go for a drink. Make sure they’re dry, and put on a decent shirt while you’re at it – such as this linen one by Hartford.

Totally tropical
Our third and final pair of swim shorts make no excuses. They are adorned, nay, emblazoned with a print that very much shouts, “I am on holiday!” It is worth remembering that Onia’s Calder swim shorts were made with the discerning gentleman in mind – the fit is inspired by classic chinos. So, it’s not all sunburn and cocktails here. Although, should you indulge in both of these things, no one will mind, and you can attempt to cover the effects of both with some new wayfarer sunglasses.
