Three Football-Inspired Pieces To Buy Now

2 July 2018

What to wear to watch the World Cup.

The style of the football terraces – once much maligned by fashion and society in general – have been increasingly embraced by the fashion industry in recent years. Yet, with the 2018 World Cup in full swing, it only seems right that designers should honor the realm of sport. Call it a sportswear revival, call it cultural fetishisation, call it whatever you like – but it’s a trend popping up all over the place.

At the spring/summer shows, designers such as Mr Pierpaolo Piccioli at Valentino, Mr John Galliano at Maison Margiela and Mr Alessandro Michele at Gucci eschewed a modern approach to the beautiful game, preferring to keep things strictly 1990s. Why this particular decade? Well, fashion’s “20-year rule” – whereby trends have a habit of repeating themselves two decades later – makes right now 1990s 2.0. It makes sense given that the industry’s top designers spend their formative years in the era that gave us grunge, Britpop and trip-hop. So, in terms of sportswear, that mean’s rib-knit crewnecks, logos from football’s heydey and zip-up track tops and matching sweatpants aplently.

Yet, rather than go head-to-toe hooligan, the trick here is to mix high and low: slot zip-ups under sharp tailoring, smart tracksuits with unstructured blazers and clean white sneakers and logoed-tees with tailored trousers and chinos. Is it something that'll live beyond 2018’s World Cup? Too early to say. But judging by the insatiable appetite for retro sportswear in general, more brands may well follow suit. Scroll down for some of our favourite pieces.
