Three New Items That Will Make You Smarter

The latest arrivals guaranteed to smarten up your image.

So much of men’s style at the moment is about either being casual or totes ironic, so we thought we would take things a little more seriously when perusing today’s drop of new clothing. It’s all well and good dressing perpetually like you’re hungover, wearing band T-shirts, or hilariously sarcastic slogans, but it is important not to neglect the smarter, more sober elements of our wardrobe. It’s time to pull up our bootstrapscomb our hair, and start looking a bit more presentable. Below, we have picked out three items, new on site today, that can bring some formality to proceedings. If you’re not quite ready to ditch your laid-back look, we have paired them with some relaxed pieces to make sure that the switch-up is smooth. Of course, if you are naturally inclined to dress smartly, feel free to ignore our styling suggestions. You can’t please all of the people all of the time. The comments on our Facebook feed are a constant reminder of this…

CHUNKY CARDIGAN

With its bold buttons, heavy construction, peak lapels and pockets, this cotton knit piece by Italian brand Lardini could be viewed as a cardigan, a blazer or a coat. And why not treat it as all three? It’s warm enough to use as outerwear on a light spring day. It’s smart enough to wear on a night out. And it has all the cosy and comforting qualities of a good cardie. Feel free to dress it up with some chinos, or down with these slouchy sweatpants.

STURDY TROUSERS

If sweatpants are not your thing, and jeans feel a little too casual, be smart with some cotton trousers. These, by the cult Japanese label Blue Blue Japan, are hand-coloured using a traditional indigo-dyeing technique which the brand uses throughout its range. We particularly like the cuffs, which bring a masculine workwear feel to your look. Keep it casual with a white T-shirt, made by Monitaly – one of our favourite new brands to MR PORTER.

SOPHISTICATED LOAFERS

We recently restoked the fires of the ongoing debate about whether one can leave the house without socks or not. But these rather sophisticated loafers, made by Berluti out of nubuck (a top-grain, supple cattle leather) practically demand your feet to be unclothed. Which is no bad thing with summer on the horizon. In the meantime, you might find some dark jeans an appropriate accompaniment. These by Dunhill ensure your look is not too formal, and will keep your legs warm until you turn to chinos.
