Three Pairs Of Boots For The New Season

Words by Mr Tom M Ford

9 September 2016

It’s time to up your footwear game – get your new-season boots from Viberg, Moncler and Prada .

Nestled deep within the many new arrivals landing on MR PORTER today, are quite a few tempting new pairs of boots that it seems would serve you well for pretty much any occasion or eventuality you might find yourself in. Need to climb a mountain? No problem at all – we have just the pair. Want to look as if you might be about to climb a mountain when you’re actually just plodding down the pavement? Sorted. Want a fresh new pair of neat and tidy suede Chelsea boots for everyday wear? Step right this way. It’s time to invest in some new shoes for the new season.

A key person responsible for selecting which shoes should grace the pages of MR PORTER is a huge fan of these suede Chelsea boots. This is a person who comes into contact with, as you can imagine, a lot of shoes. Every day. His knowledge of footwear is so well-worn in fact, you might be forgiven for thinking that he has become jaded by the whole concept of putting things on one’s feet and instead pads around the office barefoot. But no – he’s wearing these. Because he loves them. Why? Perhaps because they were made exclusively for us. Perhaps because they’re made by Viberg – a true handcrafted heritage shoe brand – with a practical Dainite sole. Or perhaps it’s just because they look really rather lovely.

These things are built for harsher terrains than our friends above. You have the sturdy Vibram sole, the hard-wearing yet suede-like nubuck material, and the high, supportive ankle. Indeed, Moncler have long made clothes fit for the outdoors (the brand is named after the French alpine village of Monestier-de-Clermont) – but you may be more familiar with their down-filled jackets. That’s all well and good – but make sure you don’t underestimate their footwear. These boots are so well designed you could just as easily wear them on the high street, too.

Which brings us to these. One glance at this pair and you could be forgiven for thinking they were hard-wearing, authentic hiking boots. The shape of the upper and the rugged, deep-set sole is reminiscent of the kind of footwear featured in photographs of some the earliest mountaineering feats. But look a little closer and you’ll see the word “Prada”. The brand has only recently been added to MR PORTER, and we are big fans of its collections. But while it has many talents and strengths, getting climbers up and down peaks safely is probably not one of them. These are much better suited to terra firma.
