THE JOURNAL

The scarf, socks and gloves to set you apart this season.
It’s all very well getting excited about investing in a new winter coat, but life is not all about the big-ticket items. We need to be measured, seek balance, and remember the saying “god is in the detail”. You may not be a religious person of course, but it is a universal fact that paying attention to the finer elements usually brings rewards. In sartorial terms, this can mean the flash of a pocket square, perhaps, or the flourish of a tie pin. But, especially since we’re experiencing ever colder weather, it can also mean woolly winter accessories. Often an afterthought, this week we’re celebrating them, because, thankfully, there has been an on-site influx of gloves, scarves and socks (yes, socks) which will help us beat the cold while improving our outfit.
THE HANDS
Although they have their place, leather gloves can sometimes look a bit severe, a bit… serial killer-ish. Obviously, they have their up-sides. Stylish. Waterproof. Fingerprints: undetectable. But they can be a bit cumbersome. Not so, however, with woollen gloves, and this simple, well-made and decidedly softer pair from cashmere specialist William Lockie will keep your frozen fingers warm as the temperature plummets. Carry on the good work with your knitwear, and stay truly toasty with this Rag & Bone sweater.
THE FEET
Socks are never the most scintillating element of a man’s wardrobe. But they are really rather essential. Especially considering the recent news that wearing shoes with bare feet is not only inadvisable from an aesthetic standpoint, but also a health one. And they can also be charming, like these sea island cotton-blend ones by John Smedley. Put them into some sturdy brogues, wear your trousers a touch above the ankle to reveal a flash of blue stripe, and you’re on to a winner.
THE NECK
Now, as we’re well aware, this is not your everyday scarf. This is not something you might find in your stocking come Christmas. Or something your auntie buys for you for your birthday. Not in appearance, nor in price tag. But hey, if we’re talking up the importance of accessories, the finer details, we may as well ramp up the “fine”. And this Begg & Co cashmere and silk scarf is nothing if not fine. If the construction and quality doesn’t appeal, then hopefully the colourful design will. If nothing else, see it as an investment. Think of all the money you spend replacing scarves you’ve left on public transport or in restaurants and been too lazy to track down. This guy will never leave your side. Or, should we say, neck. To make it really pop, wear it with a dark, block-colour coat.
