What The MR PORTER Team Will Be Wearing On Christmas Day

Words by The Daily Team

24 December 2018

The festive knits, cosy pyjamas and drawstring waistbands we’ll be turning to come 25 December.

Got your Christmas Day outfit sorted yet? From finding something to wear that won’t attract too much attention from sniping relatives to something with enough stretch to allow you to put away a bit more of the cheeseboard and resign yourself to a coma on the sofa, here are all of the things the MR PORTER team will be wearing come 25 December. Oh, and merry Christmas!

Choosing what I’ll wear for Christmas involves a little forethought, ever since a couple of years ago when I donned a pair of Comme des Garçons trousers and a well-meaning aunt commented, witheringly, that “It’s so nice that Ashley doesn’t care what anyone thinks about what he wears!” So, to field any unwelcome “compliments”, I’ll go for something suitably understated and smart that I still feel good in – a pair of black Derby shoes from Tricker’s are hard to go wrong in. This sweater from The Row will also do the job nicely, and if anyone says anything, I’ll just tell them how much it was and finish them off with a heart attack

Christmas Day for me is all about being comfortably stylish. If you want to avoid that awkward conversation with your granny about why you aren’t wearing the Rudolph knitted jumper you told her you loved, opt for this cashmere-blend Fair Isle sweater by Brunello Cucinelli. Incredibly comfortable and perfect for whether you are lounging around or have a packed family schedule. Double up on your Italian luxury with these Loro Piana drawstring trousers. They’re effortlessly smart, and the drawstring waist allows for another pig in blanket – or six.

This Norse Projects sweater is my kind of Christmas jumper, as we call them here in jolly old England: festive enough to avoid accusations of “not getting into the spirit of things”, but nothing like those ghastly novelty knits that people so enjoy wearing at this time of year. I’ll be pairing it with a rather expensive pair of tartan trousers. I bought them a few years ago; my cost-per-wear is only now dropping into double figures. They’re made from Black Watch tartan, which is that green, black and blue pattern you’re entitled to wear if you’re not part of an actual clan. (On their last outing, A Scottish friend asked me which clan’s tartan I was wearing, to which I replied: “Gucci”.) This being Christmas Day, there will invariably come a time – probably around mid-afternoon – when they’ll no longer fit. When that time comes, I’ve got a pair of cashmere sweatpants from Derek Rose waiting to be subbed in. These were also rather expensive, but despite having bought them quite recently, my cost-per-wear is already looking pretty healthy. As you soon discover when you invest in a pair of cashmere trackpants, you tend to wear them at every available opportunity.

Christmas is not only the season to be jolly, but also the season to be comfy. This year I decided to spend my well-deserved holidays break binge watching the last season of Italian mafia drama Gomorrah, eating Italian delicatessen panforte (a Tuscan speciality) and wearing a combo that not only will make me look like Cookie Monster and will entertain my nephew, but also will be extremely cosy: this homey blue fleece sweater and its matching wide-leg sweatpants, both by Beams, are made from plush fleece, they are perfect for chilling at home, but they will look the part in case my nonna pays the usual surprise visit.

Christmas Day is never going to be about formality, stiffness, or wearing your best threads. It is a day for relaxation. And eating. And drinking. And your clothing should be entirely engineered to facilitate such activities. As such, I will be wearing pyjamas for the entire day. Essential wear for expanding waist bands, errant drops of wine, and lounging in front of the TV. If I can muster up the energy, I may drag myself to the local pub, or go for a quick stroll (just to burn some energy to make space for cheese). So I may need a coat to put on over my nightwear – this Burberry trench should do very nicely.
