THE JOURNAL

The latest in our podcast series – a trip to the barbers, where hair is cut and the world is put to rights.
EPISODE 05: The Barbershop
Who knew getting your hair cut could be as good for your soul as it can for your appearance? At Upper Cut in the heart of Hackney, men of all ages from the Caribbean community and beyond visit up to once a week. But a trip to this barbers on Amhurst Road is about more than just a haircut. Amid the buzz of clippers, creating styles of the moment such as skin fades as well as more classic cuts, the meandering conversation between barbers and clients turns from parenthood to world peace, music to cricket. The atmosphere is like that of a social club: as much a forum for discussion and counsel as it is for shaving and snipping. And at the centre of it all is Mr Marcus Smith, its self-taught owner for the past five years, whose listening skills and sound advice on parenting match his dexterity with a pair of scissors.
