THE JOURNAL

A little bird told us Heron Preston might be yours, too.
Heron Preston is, undeniably, one of the most integral cogs in the hype machine currently driving streetwear. The eponymous designer’s credentials for such a position are hard to argue with. Mr Preston graduated from Parsons in New York, began working as a DJ and artistic consultant for Mr Kanye West, and helped launch the streetwear collective Been Trill, the founders of which also included Off-White’s Mr Virgil Abloh.
Mr Preston may not be quite as well-known as Mr Abloh – yet – but his trajectory as a designer rides on the same crest of the streetwear wave. Presenting his first-ever runway show last month at the menswear collections in Paris, Mr Preston’s take on streetwear is one that captures the zeitgeist of the movement – and it is a movement. The clothes – favoured by everyone from Messrs Luka Sabbat and Travis Scott to a discerning echelon of Instagram streetwear influencers – are covered in logos, mix monochrome with lurid brights, and feature all the hallmarks of what makes streetwear at the moment: belt bags, baseball caps, oversized tees and hoodies. What sets it apart and elevates it above your generic buzzy streetwear brand of the moment, though, is its unexpected design tics – one of the most striking motifs the brand is known for is the 1832 painting by Mr John James Audubon that appears on its streetwear depicting two herons in a meta nod to the designer’s name, footed with “HERON” in the signature violent orange that has also become one of the brand’s common tropes. Also see the Nasa collaboration, which Mr Preston orchestrated with a friend who was a former employee of the space agency.
We’re telling you all of this, of course, because Heron Preston lands on MR PORTER today. So, now that you know about the brand, have a look below for a pick of some of our favourites from the collection.
