THE JOURNAL

The fairly new, eco-friendly eatery with some of the best views in New York upstairs.
There is nothing quite like the pleasure of discovering an under-the-radar restaurant and making it your own, which is how MR PORTER Style Council Member and brand consultant Mr John Brodie feels about French and Italian-influenced The Osprey in Brooklyn, New York. Having opened late last year in the ecologically minded 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge, The Osprey cannot exactly be described as “new” (restaurants open and close in New York faster than you can type #foodporn), but it’s a place that still feels like a “fresh new market spot” to Mr Brodie, with “great food and lovely views”.

Before we bag a table for our next visit to New York, however, we’ve asked the regular visitor for the inside track so we can get to know it a little bit better. See what Mr Brodie has to say, below.
Why do you love The Osprey?
There have always been a handful of special occasion – read “tourist” – places along the Brooklyn waterfront with a great view of the bridges and the Lower Manhattan skyline, but The Osprey also happens to be the sort of place where I just like the super-fresh American food and the lo-fi vibe. It’s tucked away at the base of the new 1 Hotel and looks out over Brooklyn Bridge Park. And it’s kind of fun to take the ferry over from Manhattan for dinner.
Do you have a favourite spot to sit in?
The hotel has a scene-y rooftop bar, Brooklyn Heights Social Club, with a Blade Runner-worthy view of the Brooklyn Bridge. If you behave during dinner at The Osprey, they’ll hook you up for a nightcap up top.
What’s their best dish?
Chef Mike Poiarkoff first came on my radar at the nearby Vinegar Hill House. He does man-tastic comfort food in a contemporary, but not overpowering way. The risotto with lemon, spring onion and parmesan is a go-to; I’m also fond of the seared scallops with bacon-fennel marmalade, as well as the NY strip steak.
What do you always order to drink?
I’m so boring and predictable: vodka martini, up with a twist.
When is the best time to go?
Dusk. People seem to like it for brunch, but brunch is one of those things I just don’t get.
Any tips for getting a reservation?
The good news is that it is still under the radar, so just call and be your charming self.
