Where to eat, drink and rest your weary head in the UK's fine capital.
Is it that time already? Yes, before the regular world is even able to clear the sleep from its eyes post-New Year, the style world is up and about, getting ready for yet another one of those “fashion week” type events – namely the weekend of menswear shows and presentations formerly referred to as London Collections: Men and now known as London Fashion Week Men’s (no colon, much better). Whether you’re part of the circus that will be descending on the UK’s fair capital from Friday 6 to Sunday 8 January, or planning merely on being an amused observer, we thought it a good opportunity to ponder the spots that keep us going when we’re out and about, saying things like “stunning” and “revolutionary” until the words no longer make sense. Recommendations come courtesy of our Style Council, of course. This is just their kind of thing.

THE BARBARY
Getting a table here is not the easiest – there are only 24 covers. But though you may have to queue, The Barbary’s exotic, Middle Eastern-inspired cuisine is certainly worth the wait. (Plus, what else is a style aficionado supposed to do between shows?) Style Council member Mr George Lamb is a particular fan of the monkfish chermoula, but don’t leave without also trying the cauliflower “Jaffa style”.

MARK’S BAR
London is a city that loves to drink. Consequently, there are many options when it comes to finding a spot for a quick tipple – once you’re done with all the clothes nonsense. Classicists will swear by traditionally styled joints such as Dukes Bar (one-time favourite of Mr Ian Fleming) and Mark’s Club (like a home-from-home, so long as you know a member), but for a more cosmopolitan and accessible option we would recommend (alongside Style Council member and publishing mogul Mr Jefferson Hack) Mark’s Bar, the cosy basement speakeasy beneath Mr Mark Hix’s Hix restaurant in Soho. Again, you can’t reserve tables here, so turn up early-ish if you want to bag one of the supremely comfortable chesterfields. Drinks-wise, start with one of Mr Hix’s variations on the Martini – we like the Twisted Black Cow, served with a curl of lemon rind and made with British Black Cow milk vodka. Then, if you’re still standing, order the Full English Negroni.

Stay at

TOWN HALL HOTEL
Most of the action during fashion week in London unfolds in the centre of town, near the show venues. But that doesn’t mean you have to stay there – in fact, after a generous eyeful of peacocking attendees and scuttling street-style photographers, you may well feel like you want to get away from it all. For such purposes, few places come more highly recommended than Town Hall Hotel in Bethnal Green. A former town hall (get it?), the building’s tall ceilings and resplendent Art Deco interiors make checking in like stepping into a different world, away from the noise and bustle of the busy centre. “It’s different from other hotels in London,” says Style Council member and man-about-town Mr Robert Konjic. “It has an elegant little bar that serves amazing cocktails, with beyond-friendly staff.”
