THE JOURNAL

As a diligent purveyor of men’s style, we seek to curate clothing from the world’s best and well-known brands. This means, say, tailoring from the likes of TOM FORD, T-shirts by Nike, and sneakers made by Balenciaga. But we are not always looking to invest in the giants of fashion. Our crack team of buyers are also on the hunt for lesser-known gems; those designers that pack a punch when it comes to craftsmanship and design – perhaps specialists in a niche field – who instantly give our offering an edge.
It was with pleasure, then, that we discovered Cleverly Laundry – a small, but passionate business making towels, sheets, robes and pyjamas with the help of superfine cotton fabrics and a 90-year-old factory in northern Portugal. And instead of simply buying some of their stock, we decided to work with them on an exclusive capsule collection, which you can shop, below.
“We started working with MR PORTER about two years ago,” says co-founder Ms Amelia McPhee, who set up Cleverly Laundry with Ms Roshana Lewis. “Our theory [for the brand] was that men needed great bath towels, but there were no great brands or products for them… and let’s face it, in general the care factor was low. Our goal was to turn this around completely.”
Bath towels, you say? Whatever you do, don’t try to pigeonhole Cleverly Laundry. This is not “homeware”. And the pyjamas do not equal a sleepwear brand. As Ms McPhee rightly states, gents rarely think, never mind shop, in such a fashion. “We know that men don’t naturally categorise their wardrobe. We know guys love ease – having a pair of shorts or a shirt they can roll out of bed in and wear out to get the paper. Clothes that look better with creases. At the weekend, you could stay in Cleverly Laundry pretty much all night and day if you want.”
Sounds like a plan to us. Which is why we suggested the capsule in the first place. “The idea of a spring-summer collection gave us the opportunity to push the ‘easy’ boundary even further,” says Ms McPhee. “We’ve given it a yacht-y, London lido vibe. The Cleverly Laundry X MR P collection is inspired by salty air and the colours of classic speedboats: navy, white, dusk – trimmed with terra red for a sharp detail.”
So, whether you’re looking for a quality, no-nonsense bath towel, a sharp new bath robe, or simply some high-quality pyjamas (or the tacit excuse to lounge around all weekend doing absolutely nothing), Cleverly Laundry is just the ticket.
