New to MR PORTER: Marie-Stella-Maris, the grooming brand that has put providing clean water as a universal human right at its core.

There are many reasons to invest in a few new products to fill up your bathroom cupboard. You may have a particular skincare issue that you want to address. You may be a little bored, and keen to incorporate something new into your daily routine. You may simply have run out of everything else, and need refills. Any which way, there’s not often an altruistic motive behind it all. Grooming is sheer vanity. Isn’t it?

The answer is: not always. At least, not if we’re talking about Marie-Stella-Maris, the Amsterdam-based brand founded by Messrs Patrick Munsters and Carel Neuberg in 2011. Originally a mineral water brand, Marie-Stella-Maris was set up in response to the 2010 UN declaration that access to clean drinking water is a universal human right. Since its inception, therefore, it has donated a fixed amount from the sale of each of its products to fund clean drinking water projects across the globe. As the product range has grown, from water, to skincare, to home and body products and fragrances, so have the donations – now, for every care product sold, €1 will go to the brand’s charitable arm, the Marie-Stella-Maris Foundation, which so far has helped more than 18,000 people in Uganda, Tanzania, Bangladesh and other countries across nine clean water projects.

Of course, this is a mightily worthy cause. But what about the products? Thankfully, they’re rather special, too. Launching today as a global exclusive on MR PORTER, the Marie-Stella-Maris range features a range of subtle, clean and beautifully designed care products, all of which are made in Sweden from 90 to 100 per cent natural ingredients. Scroll down for an introduction to a few of the products launching today. (And PS, make sure to also try the facial oil, which smells marvellous and makes an excellent treatment to keep your skin fresh and moisturised overnight.)

FOR SKIN

Marie-Stella-Maris’s Poivre Noir Frais fragrance is light and pleasingly bitter at the same time, combining black pepper with musk for a subtle effect that will nonetheless get you up in the morning. Install the brand’s liquid soap and body lotion in your shower and you’ll see what we mean.

FOR HOME

One of Marie-Stella-Maris’ most unique, and bestselling products is its Room Spray – a spritz-able home fragrance that the brand suggests you use either on its own or as a top-up to one of its candles (which should only be lit for about 15 minutes at a time, to stop the wick charring and spoiling the scent). This bottle in particular contains the brand’s signature Objets d’Amsterdam fragrance, a complex concoction that brings together notes of amber, sage, green tea and orange. If you’ve ever visited Marie-Stella-Maris’s store in Amsterdam, this will bring you right back to its peaceful canalside location. If not, we suggest you close your eyes and imagine it. A most enjoyable experience. The brand’s Eau de Lavande linen water, meanwhile, offers a more soporific combination of lavender, eucalyptus and musk, the idea here being that you spray it on your sheets and drift amiably off into sweet oblivion.

FOR HAIR

An awful lot of commercially produced haircare products contain silicone to increase shine and parabens as preservatives. But refreshingly, Marie-Stella-Maris’ signature shampoo and conditioner don’t rely on either of these questionable ingredients, instead opting for aloe vera, vitamin B, birch juice and a mix of essential oils to soothe the scalp and keep hair moisturised and shiny. Use them in combination with the soap and body wash, and marvel at the minimal cleanliness of your shower cubicle.
