THE JOURNAL

There is a particular time of the day in the northern Italian region of Piedmont, when the Langhe hills turn the colour of the prized wine they produce. As the sun drops, the upper vineyards sit above the nebbia (fog) mist, which turns the leafy slopes into shades of ruby and brick red. It’s this landscape that Canali has taken as the starting point for its new exclusive capsule with MR PORTER, Le Langhe’s Leisure Time.
The Italian label has spent more than 90 years refining a singular idea of Italian tailoring that’s soft-shouldered and lightly constructed. Founded outside Milan in 1934 and still helmed with the same family-run precision since, the house has always favoured ease over rigidity, and this capsule is an extension of that philosophy.

The Langhe, in southern Piedmont, is Italy’s wine region: Unesco-listed vineyards, medieval hill towns, cellars stacked with barrels of ageing Barolo. Creative director Alessio Lillocci and the Canali creative team built the collection around regional textures and translated the landscape’s palette directly onto the pieces. Off-white and light grey stand for the morning mist, chestnut brown and dark grey recall the vineyard soil and running through almost every look is a Barolo red, coming straight from the wine itself.
The pieces read as the ideal wardrobe for a long weekend but certainly won’t look out of place in the city. A brown wool overcoat, cut with Canali’s signature lightness, opens onto a red lining and is paired with a fisherman-rib turtleneck. Elsewhere, a lambskin jacket comes as an alternative for milder autumn days, styled over white trousers for an easy off-duty look. A grey suit is broken up entirely: a Prince of Wales checked jacket worn open over a crew neck and tonal trousers.

The same details are carried through to the accessories. Think cashmere socks, baseball caps, beanie hats and footwear offerings that cut across the formal and casual spectrums. This autumn, take this capsule as a way of living, rather than mere additions to your wardrobe – the tranquillity of a region that still moves at harvest time, brought to life by a house whose ethos and craftsmanship share the same unhurried pace.
