THE JOURNAL

We’ve all felt it. The embarrassment caused when encountering someone wearing the exact same item of clothing as you. The Chinese even have a slang term for it – zhuàng shān (which translates as “bump shirt”). A message, if not a shirt, worth bumping, then, is that among the covetable pieces available at MR PORTER are ones you won’t find anywhere else. Not at another online retailer, certainly. We work closely with the brands we stock to drill down into what the customer – dear reader, we mean you – really wants. So closely, in fact, that many of our favourite designers sometimes come to us with products that are just for us. Or, rather, again, you.
Introducing the Exclusives, a selection of pieces that are just that: exclusive. To us, to you. It could be just a very particular style, fabrication or colourway. It could be an entire capsule collection, made in collaboration with yours truly. These are limited lines – with 11 such items showcased below. Only for those in the know. (And no more: “Did I miss the memo?”)
01. The Boglioli twill shirt

A family-run outfit, the Italian brand Boglioli can boast of four generations of tailoring know-how to draw on. This Italian-made twill shirt with patch pockets could be worn by any age demographic, at any time, and would still look the part. However, in this glorious green, you’ll only find it here.
02. The Balenciaga City sweater

Another pop of colour, this Italian-made purple wool-blend sweater comes in a boxy fit, with dropped shoulders, that has become something of a signature for Balenciaga. (Although, again, MR PORTER is the place to get it.)
03. The Mr P. pleated trousers

As our in-house brand, every piece by Mr P. is exclusively available on our site. In all, you’ll find a complete wardrobe within the collection. And these versatile wool trousers will seamlessly slip into almost any outfit. Mid-rise with pleats, they’re cut in a wider, straight-leg shape for fluid movement.
04. The visvim Motors Revival T-shirt

Our motorsport-inspired collaboration with visvim is suitably flying off the grid. Secure a piece of the action with this logo Jumbo tee. As the name suggests, it comes generously proportioned for an oversized vintage look.
05. The Paul Smith striped chambray shirt

In the biblical prophecies of Ezekiel, God was described as riding around in a chariot featuring “a wheel in the middle of a wheel” (custom rims, possibly?). That has absolutely nothing to do with this button-down cotton chambray shirt by Paul Smith, other than the latter features lines within lines. Call it pattern recognition.
06. The God’s True Cashmere checked shirt

Whether or not this God’s True Cashmere shirt, too, was touched by divine hands would be an ecumenical matter. We can confirm, however, that the brand’s cofounder Brad Pitt must have signed it off at some point. Fabric this soft certainly has a celestial quality, in a contrast blue-and-yellow check you won’t find anywhere else. At least this side of paradise.
07. The Canali suit jacket

With more than 90 years under its belt, Canali is a luxury Italian tailor and fabric manufacturer that you can trust. In recent years, the collection has broadened to take in off-duty attire to match its formalwear. But if you could pull anything out from its line, then a classic double-breasted suit jacket would be a good place to start. This Italian-made piece comes in a soft cotton-corduroy the colour of championship-winning conkers.
08. The Inis Meáin Ridges Aran sweater

Inspiration can come from anywhere. In the case of this cable-knit sweater by Inis Meáin, the raised potato beds and limestone grykes of the brand’s namesake island, captured here in beige lambswool. It goes without saying that the output of this tiny Irish outpost is the best in its field.
09. The Enfants Riches Déprimés leather belt

Some of us just want an accessory to keep our trousers up. Which is fine. But if you’re in the market for a strap that can be the main character of an outfit, it’s time to get on the statement belt trend. And there can be few declarations more assertive than this studded piece by – who else? – Enfants Riches Déprimés. The cult LA label has thrown all the hardware at it, including floral embellishments and an iron cross, on a green strip of leather that wouldn’t look out of place on Axl Rose’s waist.
10. The Officine Creative Militia 002 sneakers

Distributed to the West German armed forces from the 1970s onwards, then sold through military surplus stores after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the German army trainer (Gat) isn’t in any way limited. The design itself has been reworked by everyone from adidas Originals to Maison Margiela, with adidas themselves locked in a disagreement as to the origins of the sneaker style. However, Officine Creative’s take is far from standard issue. Handmade in Italy from calf hair, they come in a rich burgundy brown with contrast gum sole.
11. Drake’s Games blazer

As its name suggests, Drake’s double-breasted blazer is a playful twist on the traditional piece. Featuring a structured profile, peak lapels and front flap pockets, it is cut from linen in a mossy green. The brand’s suggestion is to wear yours over a cricket vest with a matching trim. As in, a piece of clothing sported on the crease, with an item that looks better with a few.
