What To Buy Him For Father’s Day

Words by Mr Adam Welch

10 June 2016

Treat the man who made you on 19 June with help from our carefully curated gift guide.

How are things with your ? Are they good? Could they be better? When’s the last time you two just sat down and really talked, you know, just had it out. Talked about , life, emotions, feelings – the stuff and substance of life itself? If all the above just makes you shudder with embarrassment – don’t worry, it’s OK, your dad probably feels the same. Of course it would be lovely if you got the  to really open up this 19 June for Father’s Day, but we’re sure he’d be equally happy, in place of or in addition to a heart-to-heart, with something nice from MR PORTER (which needn’t necessarily cost you the earth) and a few well-timed jokes (which are absolutely free). Scroll down for our top  tips for 2016:

THE NOT-SO-SUBTLE COMPLIMENT

There’s something brilliantly overstated about presenting a male friend or relative with ’s citrusy, quirky fragrance . “Ha ha”, he’ll say as he unwraps this one, “Mister Marvellous, that’s me alright, you got it spot-on.” Cue awkward laughter from the whole  – isn’t it fun? All jokes aside though, this is a great way to shower your intended recipient with affection without laying it on too thick. And, crucially, it’s a rather good fragrance, too, combining invigorating (Byredo calls them “astonishing”) top notes of mandarin leaves and neroli flower with a leafy heart and crisp, woody base note of white cedarwood. Present it to him with the  for double the chuckles.

THE PRACTICAL AND ACCEPTABLE GIFT

The  falls squarely into the category of things-you-really-need-but-don’t-tend-to-buy-for-yourself. Which is why it makes a particularly good gift – it’s not only useful, but it’s unlikely he’ll already have one. Pack it full of goodies such as ’s  (don’t be fooled by the scary name, it’s actually a very pleasant, easy to use and residue-free spray on moisturiser) and see his tired  light up as he unpacks them, one by one.

THE FAIL-SAFES

And now for a couple of items no man can really object to, no matter how cluttered and complicated his life is. ’s ultra-minimal, but pleasingly textured  is an absolute classic that will never lose its usefulness (well, until they start embedding contactless pay microchips into our arms, shudder). It will also encourage the recipient to simplify his life somewhat – there’s something wonderfully liberating about  out a bulging  of all those useless loyalty cards and old receipts, to replace it with something slimline like this. If you think he’d like something bigger, why not opt for this timeless  from  – a style that we at MR PORTER are so convinced is perennially tasteful that we have included it in our permanent collection of  that are fit for every season. If you’re going for the bag, you might also want to reiterate the “goodies” tip, above.
