THE JOURNAL

Update your casual wardrobe with these three key pieces – all as chic as they are comfortable.
Grown men collect sweats like children collect blankets and stuffed animals – ie, for emotional security. Typically, they function as an arsenal of slouchy, comfortable garments you whip out when you find yourself slumming around the house hungover, or travelling to and from the gym. However, this is of course not the only way to wear them these days. In fact, many of the brands on MR PORTER are offering sharp, simple renovations of classic sweat styles, all of which have the ability to “sportify” your outfit a little without lowering the general tone. Scroll down to find out how to work these seamlessly into your casual wardrobe.
THE HOODIE
The standard colour for sweats is grey – so much so, that going with a different shade can appear really rather revolutionary. The above hoodie from LA-based brand Simon Miller is particularly interesting in this respect, as it employs a deep shade of burgundy, a somewhat more sophisticated and evening-worthy colour. Thanks to the slim fit, it’s perfect for wearing under an overcoat, Mr Kanye West-style, but you might just as well throw it over a T-shirt in a complementary indigo blue.
THE SWEATSHIRT
The statement sweatshirt is a piece that’s been particularly pioneered by brands such as Givenchy (with its screeching monkey prints and bold logotypes) and Neil Barrett (with its iconic diamond-panelled and lightning-print designs). But for those not quite willing to go the whole hog in this respect, the above variation from Hartford offers a more crisp and subtle take on the look. Wear it with a pair of slim chinos from Oliver Spencer and you’ll very much live up to the strident slogan emblazoned on your chest.
THE SWEATPANTS
Mr Todd Snyder’s ongoing collaboration with classic sportswear brand Champion has yielded some truly excellent, incredibly tactile results, this latest pair of sweatpants being a prime example of that fact. Inspired by the simple, functional designs of yesteryear, these track pants have a neat, slim elasticated cuff and sleek, streamlined silhouette, which makes them much more sharp-looking than your average slouchy pair. Wear them with a bomber jacket and a pair of box-fresh sneakers from WANT Les Essentials – another brand that does pristine minimalism very well indeed.
