Fans of bold, big-statement jewellery, rejoice: the second collection from 42 SUNS arrives this week, promising to deliver plenty more of what made the brand’s debut such a hit when it launched exclusively on MR PORTER last autumn. Vibrantly coloured gemstones? Check. Every one of the pieces in this second collection is designed to spotlight an individual stone, with deep-blue sapphire and brilliant white topaz joining the ranks alongside vivid pink and orange sapphire.

Versatility? Check. With each of the four lab-grown gemstones available as a signet ring, an earring, a tennis bracelet or a pendant necklace, 42 SUNS once again offers huge mix-and-match potential for anyone looking to jump on the jewellery stacking trend.

Fans of the first collection will find plenty to love but there’s plenty of newness, too. “42 SUNS is a brand that always tries to be ahead of the trends we are seeing in the men’s jewellery space, says Mr Maxim De Turckheim, Senior Buyer for Fine Jewellery at MR PORTER. This is reflected in the use of distinctive round-cut gemstones, complementing the emerald-cut stones of the debut collection, and in the metal hardware, which is handcrafted from brushed white gold or rhodium-plated black gold.

“This brushed finish in white or black gold is something we’re seeing men gravitating towards more and more,” De Turckheim says. “It really makes these pieces feel super masculine and discrete.”

Sizes have been updated, too. Complementing the chunky yellow-gold signet rings, tennis bracelets and necklaces of 42 SUNS’ debut collection are a newly available selection of more delicate pieces, which not only offer a slimmer profile but also have the benefit of coming in at a lower price point, great news if you’re looking to mix a few different pieces together. And if you’re a maximalist when it comes to jewellery, chunky gradient necklaces should offer the bigger-is-better statement you’re looking for.

Think of this Second Collection as a continuation of the brand’s first, then – an evolution rather than a revolution. It’s an iterative approach to design informed primarily by the brand’s revolutionary zero-waste business model, which sees any surplus materials recycled or re-used in future collections, but also by the continued popularity of brightly coloured gemstones, a trend which shows no sign of abating.

“The appetite among men for colourful, expressive jewellery is not slowing down,” De Turckheim says, pointing to the jewellery worn by trend-setting celebrities at events such as the Met Gala and the Oscars. “42 SUNS has once again captured the mood with this exclusive new collection.”
