THE JOURNAL

Start as you mean to go on, a wise person once said. And if the mantra could be applied to pulling killer outfits out the bag, it appears the celebrities got the memo this January. To be honest, we’d have even lowered our sartorial standards a smidge for the start of year, what with the hostile weather and general winter blues making styling oneself more challenging. As it turns out, we didn’t need to.
It helps of course that the rich and famous have had a swathe of highly publicised events to show up to and show out at. Paris Fashion Week, for one. And of course, the kick-off of awards season. Amid a swathe of stellar looks on the front row, the red carpet and even in the streets, these are the seven that stood out.

Mr Serge Gnabry

At the Sacai AW23 show, Bayern Munich footballer Mr Serge Gnabry put comfort first by opting for a cosy and breezy fit. He wears a pair of almost see-through airy linen striped trousers with a white shirt layered under an oversized Argyle cream-and-brown cardigan that could substitute for a human hug. The juxtaposition of the summery fabrics against the fuzzy cardigan gives an effortless, “I’m just chilling” energy. But take note: sticking to a creamy, neutral palette makes it all smart and put together.

Mr Diego Calva

Mr Diego Calva may be wearing linen, a quintessential summer fabric, in January, but he’s got a very good reason. The actor’s Thom Browne ensemble at the Australian premiere of his new movie, Babylon, is perfect for this time of year in the southern hemisphere. His tan-coloured suit eschews the brand’s signature sharp tailoring in favour of something more relaxed. Meanwhile, the pleated pants with oversized cuffs, braces and striped tie add an old-school vibe that nods to the movie’s 1920s setting, while complementary brown shoes finish the look nicely.

Tyler, the Creator

This image of Tyler, the Creator has electrified the team here at MR PORTER. The cheetah print tie, in particular, has us riled up – in a good way. A tie? In 2023? Ground-breaking. Of course, the tie on its own isn’t enough to make an outfit, so we must also pay tribute to the crisply pleated trousers and the preppy cardigan and loafers. Top it all off with a simple puffer and this is a look that will take you swimmingly into the new year.

Mr Luca Guadagnino

That Mr Luca Guadagnino only pops up on our best-dressed lists every so often is more a measure of his diligence (let’s be honest, he’s far too busy making great movies to show up to every opening of an envelope) than his style – which, let’s be clear, is impeccable. As it happens, he’s so beloved by the fashion world that, in November, he joined Bones And All cast members Ms Chloë Sevigny and Ms Taylor Russell in LOEWE’s SS23 pre-collection campaign. This month, he stepped out to attend the house’s AW23 show in Paris wearing a graphic knit, puffy napa leather track pants and tonal sneakers designed by Mr Jonathan Anderson. If this ongoing LOEWE-Luca love-in is hinting to a potential collaboration, let’s just say we wouldn’t be mad about it.

Mr Donald Glover

Remember when your mum would pick you up from karate, throw a coat over your shoulders and bundle you into the back of the family car with the promise of a chocolate bar from the corner shop on the way home? Well, we’ll wager a Snickers that you didn’t manage it with the swagger, nor the moustache, that Mr Donald Glover displayed at this year’s Golden Globes. It helps that the Atlanta polymath was kitted out with a slouchy kimono-style satin wrap and tuxedo jacket by SAINT LAURENT rather than a gi from the local specialist sportswear shop. Crane stance? Well, he certainly won in the sartorial stakes by a stretch.

Mr Paul Bettany

Despite a decades-long career including major roles in film, TV and theatre, Mr Paul Bettany has managed to keep his personal life relatively private. This means that the uninitiated may be unaware of his sartorial prowess, but, for those in the know, Mr Bettany has long been the thinking man’s style icon. He’s been honing his wearable vintage-inspired look for years, which variously combines understated tailoring and structured jackets (as seen here) with classic knits and retro accessories such as his go-to aviator or yellow-tinted glasses. The off-duty look he wore earlier this month in New York channels screen heroes such as Mr Steve McQueen, perhaps with a soupçon of inspiration from that other well-known nostalgia fan, Mr Wes Anderson.

Mr Evan Mock

Some men are just built for clothes – and Mr Evan Mock is one of them. At this point, we’re convinced the actor-model-skater could get papped taking his bins out in the previous night’s pyjamas and still somehow look like the star of a high-fashion campaign. Thankfully, for us, the man actually makes a bit of an effort each time he steps out the house. He also clearly has a knack for putting together a head-turning (yet never outlandish) outfit, as he once again proved at the Paris Fashion Week shows. Risqué sheer crop top, immaculately tailored trousers and a fuzzy bolero jacket to boot? Whoever said head-to-toe black was boring just didn’t know where to shop (SAINT LAURENT, FYI).
