THE JOURNAL

Between the blockbuster bookends that are New York’s Met Gala and the Cannes Film Festival, the month of May has brought with it a wealth of stellar outfits to sink our greedy teeth into. And not just the ultra-fancy tailoring and avant-garde moments that come with the red-carpet territory, mind you, but plenty of on-the-town street style that wouldn’t earn you odd looks in the real world, either. In either case, we’ve been reminded this month of the adage that great style is as much about what you wear as it is the confidence and flair with which you wear it – not everyone can exude rock-star energy in tailoring à la Mr Bill Nighy, nor show up to the glitziest movie event of the year in sneakers, as Mr Pedro Almodóvar did. Here, we’ve paid tribute to those two MR PORTER favourites, plus five more celebs who won our coveted seal of approval.

Mr Bill Nighy

MR PORTER has been aware of Bill Nighy’s style credentials for some time – the British actor starred in a fashion shoot for us all the way back in 2011, if you can believe it. Which is to say, we were not in the least bit surprised to see him arriving at this April’s Met Gala on the arm of none other than Ms Anna Wintour herself. One of the most consistently well-dressed men on the planet, Nighy knows what he likes and he sticks to it, feeling no pressure to reinvent himself year after year. His navy blazer, tailored in the Savile Row style with a long seat and low button stance, is as much a personal style signature as those famous black glasses.

Mr Pedro Almodóvar

Gen-Z fashion folk shouldn’t sleep on Pedro Almodóvar. Those in the know will attest that the Spanish director has been the man of the hour for, erm, a minute now. This month, he joined the group of Hollywood big names at the 76th Cannes Film Festival to present his new short film Strange Way Of Life, a much-awaited queer cowboy drama starring Messrs Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal. For such a veteran, the red carpet looked like a breeze – a plain varsity jacket, patterned shirt, black trousers and basketball-inspired sneakers. Now, did you say something about a dress code?

Mr Joel Edgerton

The actor Mr Joel Edgerton seems to have found the exact nexus between clean and a bit grungy with this otherwise low-key outfit. The secret to the sauce? He’s cleverly colour-blocked with some of the best hues in the classic palette (indigo, cream, black, navy). What this means is that pairing clean trousers and an elegant sweater with beaten-up boots and a denim jacket-cum-double-breasted-blazer feels somewhat deliberate, not like he’s thrown on whatever happens to be atop the laundry pile. Devil-may-care hair, a duffle bag and really excellent sunglasses are the cherry on top of this springtime winner.

Bad Bunny

Is it just us or has Bad Bunny been killing it on the style front lately? From his all-leather look on a date night with a certain supermodel to his floral, backless Met Gala moment courtesy of Jacquemus, the Reggaeton sensation has rarely made a misstep. Although always up for taking risks, this fit is more on the low-key side. That said, the cohesive warm-brown palette, flared trousers, dispersed silver accents and overall 1970s cowboy vibe show there’s been plenty of thought put in beforehand. And ’tis the season to finish up your look with a sleek pair of sunglasses. Even at night.

Mr Mathieu Blazy

Hands can be very useful in most lines of work – particularly for the creative director of Bottega Veneta. But in certain contexts, usually those involving a camera being pointed at you, at an art gallery, it’s hard to know what to do with them. At this year’s spring benefit hosted at the Dia Beacon, Mr Matthieu Blazy wisely chose to keep his mitts tucked away – a pose familiar to those who have found themselves in similarly cerebral situations, where our prehensile appendages serve only to distract. The key to Blazy’s outfit is that it doesn’t try to outplay the pieces hung on the wall. Navy blazer, shirt (untucked), jeans, chunky black Derby shoes – his ensemble is effortlessly everyday, and yet somehow elevated. Also, hands behind the back does wonders for the posture.

Mr Will Sharpe

Not to brag, but we like to think we know Mr Will Sharpe pretty well here at MR PORTER, having shot him only a few months ago. But even we were caught by surprise – and may have had to double check the image credits – when he rolled up to Bafta TV Awards in this unbelievably sleek outfit. Is that really nerdy Ethan in head-to-toe black Fendi tailoring and smoked-out shades looking like the world’s most glamorous gangster? It can’t be! (Oh, wow – it is.) And sure, he may not actually be a tech gazillionaire – just a very convincing actor – but that shouldn’t stop his hoodie-clad real-life counterparts over in Silicon Valley from taking a few notes.

Mr Liu Haoran

After filming his new movie, The Breaking Ice, in suitably freezing conditions, Chinese actor Mr “Turbo” Liu Haoran must have been glad to be in the sunny climes of the Cannes Film Festival. For the occasion, he took a mix-and-match approach to summer tailoring with a linen shirt, relaxed blazer and pleated trousers. Note how he’s expertly worked a trinity of neutral tones – beige, brown and slate grey – into an effortless, distinguished look that belies his 25 years. But there are some youthful touches, which come via the perfectly coordinated sneakers and the literal rose-tinted glasses.
