THE JOURNAL

Here at MR PORTER, we’re firm believers that every man’s footwear rotation should contain at least a good pair (or two) of sneakers, whatever the season. Once a sporting staple, sneakers have long since established themselves as an essential part of our off-duty wardrobes, their versatility, comfort and street-smart looks making them an easy option for almost any situation. And while we’re proud to call ourselves the home of long-lasting style, we’re in favour of updating your kick game every so often. Without further ado, then, we’ve rounded up our favourite pairs right now, from adidas’ OG Samba to Rick Owens’ take on basketball high-tops.

The New Balance technical pair

New Balance’s 860 Tech styles are designed with runners in mind, but they’ll work just as well with jeans or shorts with no track or trail in sight. The Fresh Foam X midsoles and internal gussets at the tongue give them that trademark New Balance comfort, too.

The adidas Originals in-demand kicks

The Samba sneakers by adidas Originals’ have been all the rage this summer, and we can see why. They have a distinct retro feel to them (they were first designed for football players in 1949), but are still versatile enough to be worn everyday. This black colourway is one of our all-time favourites.

The Rick Owens revisited designs

A playful take on retro basketball styles, Rick Owens’ leather low-top sneakers, alongside its coveted Geobasket styles, are some of the brand’s most popular designs. For a styling tip, remember that Rick Owens goes best with more Rick Owens, so match them with a pair of the label’s drawstring shorts.

The iconic New Balance style

When they say that practice makes perfect, we can’t help but think about New Balance’s 990 sneakers – the brand has offered up four different iterations before landing on the 990 v4, part of its Made in USA line. The subtly distressed suede, mesh and rubber panels of this purple-hued pair give them a cool, lived-in appeal.
