Why The Sandals Trend Is More Fun Than You Think

Words by The Daily Team

25 April 2018

Dip your toe in: three summer shoes that are practical and stylish.

Sandals don’t have the best associations for everyone. Yes, they help your feet stay cool, but they also tend to be worn by one’s parents on walking holidays or by children in nativity plays. Practical, yes. Historically accurate, often. But stylish? Not always. We realise, therefore, that we might have a bit of convincing to do when it comes to this particular spring 2018 trend. The reason it’s a trend at all is that, at this fashion moment in which streetwear and pool slides are in the ascendancy, the sandals on offer are much more fun than of yore. Here are a few of our current favourites, which, we hope you will agree, are far from the usual.

THE POOL SLIDES

Yes, everyone’s doing pool slides at the moment, but those on offer from Mr Virgil Abloh have a particularly post-modern twist to them, thanks to their striped spray-paint graphic and wrong-way-round “left” and “right” labels. Wear them with a tie-dye T-shirt from Aries and consider yourself at the forefront of this year’s wry, street-inspired trends.

THE HUARACHE

What’s a huarache, you ask? Well, as well as being a particularly successful style of Nike sneaker, it’s a type of traditional woven-leather Mexican sandal, which has been around since pre-Columbian times, and was often worn by surfers in Baja during the 1960s. This particular style from Malibu, with its thick rubber sole, offers a contemporary and admirably sturdy variation on the archetype. Continue the traditional-made-modern theme with a denim overshirt from KAPITAL.

THE STYLISH SPORT SANDAL

Has a nylon-webbing sport sandal ever looked this good? Probably not, but we’ve come to expect such wonders from Hender Scheme, a Japanese brand that unites ultra premium leathers with classic shapes from the recent history of men’s sneaker and shoe design. The serrated rubber soles might get a little clogged on a hike, but they will add a technical edge to a casual weekend wardrobe this summer. Stay rough and ready (but, in truth, elegant and stylish) by wearing them with a pair of ripstop trousers from Engineered Garments.
