MR PORTER Style Council Member Mr Ivan Pun recommends his favourite restaurant.
If you’re looking for somewhere to eat, the Style Council restaurant recommendations in our Address Book only go so far. If you’re in a certain city, you can browse the restaurant listings and see where our Members like to go and why. But to really get to grips with a place before you make a booking or send an email to try and wangle a table (see below), you need to do a bit more digging. So goes the thinking behind our Ask A Regular series, which this week brings us to Hong Kong with a tip from Chinese-Burmese entrepreneur Mr Ivan Pun. Here’s the inside track on his favourite French restaurant Belon.

Mr Ivan Pun
Why do you love Belon?
Belon serves exceptional neo-bistro French food that is refined, seasonally driven but unpretentious. Daniel Calvert is definitely one of the best chefs working in Asia today. Belon is a great change from the stuffier traditional French dining rooms that have dominated Hong Kong for so long. It shows the shift in the city’s food scene as well the way my generation like to eat, in a more unfussy way. Belon is a neighbourhood restaurant with incredible cooking in the heart of SoHo. I usually go once a month.
Do you have a favourite table?
The corner table at the back right-hand side is the cosiest spot in the restaurant. In terms of decor, Belon is a modern take on a traditional Parisian bistro with subtle contemporary touches, such as the alabaster-style tables.
What’s the best dish?
Most things are delicious, but my favourite dishes would be the merguez sausage sandwich and Belon’s signature roast chicken with a side of pomme purée.
What do you order to drink?
I always have a martini in the cocktail bar upstairs, which is super stylish.
When is the best time to go?
It’s open for lunch at the weekends, but I prefer going late at night to enjoy the moody ambience.
Who do you take with you?
I love taking friends from out of town who don’t expect a meal like this in Hong Kong. When people think of HK, they think of dim sum, barbecue, wonton noodles or seafood on Lamma Island, which are, of course, incredible. But it’s nice to surprise guests a little sometimes.
How do we get a table?
Book in advance. You can also try and charm Roxy, who controls the bookings across all Black Sheep restaurants, the company that owns Belon (as well as Carbone, Ho Lee Fook and Le Garçon Saigon), by email. Once you’re in, look out for Liam, the French waiter who looks like a young Alain Delon. He makes the experience just that much more Parisian.
