It may have passed you by (OK, it probably hasn’t), but we at MR PORTER have had our eyes trained on the West Coast of the US this past week. The reason? We’ve just launched our Made In California project – a series of 12 new capsule collections, exclusive to us, from the best brands in the Golden State. It’s a particularly apt time, therefore, to issue some travel advice for that most wonderful, but imposing of Californian cities, Los Angeles. To give it all a bit of local colour, we’ve consulted Style Council member and Los Angeleno Mr John Pearson – he of “original male supermodel” fame. “Joan’s on Third is the new sibling to the original in Hollywood and is just a fantastic meeting place for breakfast/brunch. There’s always a fun crowd there, from actors old and new to young families, writers, producers and perhaps the odd porn wannabe with freshly pumped lips. Nonetheless, the actual venue is what’s most attractive: high ceilings, crisp white walls, huge glass doors allowing for streaming light. Get over the fact that it’s in ‘The Valley’ and try to visit on a Sunday where afterwards, you step out into a wonderful organic market.”

“Nobu is… Nobu… Sip a cocktail in elegant slumber and be hypnotised by the crashing Malibu waves, lit as perfectly as a scene from a Tom Ford movie. And then feast on arguably the best sushi in LA… possibly in the US. But here, it’s about the buzz as much as the feast – the crowd is a veritable who’s who of all varieties of industry. I was recently surprised by how many twentysomethings were in attendance. It begs the question: how can they afford it?”

“There are several great museums in LA but perhaps the most impressive is the new Getty designed by Richard Meier. The building itself is a work of art with viewpoints scanning all of Los Angeles. It’s also home to a fantastic contemporary and modern art collection, with visiting exhibitions popping in to add value to the mix. We recently had a small dinner party for my wife’s magazine on the deck, watching the sun set, on a Monday (closed to the public) and felt very spoilt to eat dinner on such a terrace and to actually be driven to the entrance in contrast to having to catch the monorail, which is the usual mode. Get lost for a day at the Getty, either solo or with someone you love.”
