What To Pack For A Low-Key Adventure

The travel essentials you need for a laid-back summer holiday.

Holidays in 2017 have reached new heights. Once upon a time, you might have headed somewhere simply for sun, sea and a spot of beach reading, but now you’re probably planning to spend your well-earned break trekking through the jungle in Costa Rica, sailing across the ocean on a networking cruise, or doing pool-side yoga in a 12-star Thai retreat.

While there’s certainly nothing wrong with any of the above, we often crave something a little more back to basics. A simple holiday, which requires simple packing. Thankfully, there some essentials new to MR PORTER that are perfect for such a trip. Scroll down for three easy travel accessories to aid you in your laidback adventure.

THE BACKPACK

The key to holiday dressing is to look like you belong. And nothing screams “tourist” like a bumbag or a shiny, new hyper-functional sports backpack. Which is where this nice dusty blue canvas bag comes in. Nonnative’s aptly named Roamer rucksack is suitably understated, and also spacious enough to hold all of your essentials when you’re on the move. One such handy item is a sweatshirt – it’ll protect you from any off-shore breezes, and double up as a rather stylish headrest for any long journeys. And since adventures require a spirit of open-mindedness, why not try channelling one of this season’s key trends with this salmon pink sweater from minimalist expert Save Khaki United?

THE POOL SLIDES

Summer footwear can prove rather tricky for men, but as we have already noted on The Daily, sandals have become more acceptable in the past couple of years, and there are now plenty of options to choose from. For a casual day of holidaying with no set agenda, a pair of slides are ideal – as useful for paddling in the shallows as they are for plodding around town in. You can subtly show off your style nous with this dollar-bill-printed pair from Givenchy. And since you’ll hopefully be in a temperate climate, you’ll need a pair of shorts, too. This example from Californian surfer brand Stüssy are cut in a fleece-back cotton jersey, and have an internal drawstring for maximum comfort.

THE BRACELET

As we’ve already mentioned, holidays are a time to let loose and experiment a little. Which means swapping that smart business watch for a cheerful bracelet, like this one from Mikia. Inspired by globe-trotting adventures, this will help give you that cultured, well-travelled look, as well as serving as a great conversation starter. Just because you’re relaxing a little with your wristwear, it doesn’t mean you should let your general presentation go. So, pack this neat Czech & Speake manicure set – with rounded tools to comply with hand-luggage regulations – to keep your hands and your feet neat, wherever you might be.
